Angry Ouch! Broken Wheel Lock

Just want to vent a bit. I was changing my Dunlop M3 winter tires out in the weekend. After finished doing the two on the left side, I started on the right rear tire. Guess what? The key broke a piece off the lock nut. I was just using the wrench that came with the car, no air tool.

I called my Acura dealer in a panic and the service manager agreed to take a look at it immediately. They had a set of master keys that might be able to remove the broken nut. Well, the master key broken another piece off the nut. They couldn't do anything else for me that day because it was a Saturday.

I think that Acura should cover this crappy McGard wheel lock and the labor of removing the chipped one under warranty. My baby is less than a year old! The service manager said he had to check with Acura on Monday. I am not going to take no as an answer.

After doing a search in the forum, I found out that this has happened to other members and Acura did cover the repair in the past. That makes me feel a little better.

If you see a TSX on the road with two winter tires on the right and two all season tires on the left, that's me!

Happened to me about a month ago. Both the key and one wheel lock broke. Went to the dealer and they had to use a impact gun to remove the broken lock.

Didn't even think about asking to have it covered under warranty although its been over 60K so I was probly SOL anyway.

Quote directly out of page 33 of Acura Warranty manual.

"Acura will repair or replace any accessory that is defective in material or workmanship under normal use. Acura will decide in an accessory will be repaired rather than replaced. If an accessory was installed by an Acura Dealer, all parts and labor costs are covered. If accessory was installed by someone else, the cost of all parts to repai or replace it are covered by Acura, but you must pay the labor costs."

Installed Prior to New Vehicle Pick-up - Covered for 4 years, 50,000 miles
Installed after new car sale - 1 year, 12,000 miles

It breaks becuase whoever did the install in the first place tightened them up too tight. They probably used an impact wrench.

Just got back from the dealer. They fixed it up for me under warranty and gave me a new set of wheel lock. They even put the other two summer tires on and washed my car for me. I am a happy camper. Go Acura!

hmm... well... an impact wrench is just what it sounds like. It uses a huge amount of force suddenly like an impact to get something loose. So it could've been the fatigue caused at the dealership when they did something to it that weakened the lug. Not saying 100% that's it, but i wouldn't be surprised.

So you got new wheel locks AND added some swirl marks in the paint for free?

At least they fixed the lock problem under warranty.

I wouldn't even bother with those locks, they are a waste. It takes a thief about 3-seconds to get one of those locks off. Have you seen any of the history on those locks....?

Yea, I am contemplating whether to put those stupid locks on or not but I decide to have them for now. I can always remove them later. It's free anyway.

As for the swirl marks, I don't really care. The car will have scratches sooner or later.

Thanks everyone!
