Oil brand to use?
Hi guys, I have been putting only standard Honda OEM oil in my car since day 1. I wonder if there would be any benefit to make the switch to a MOBIL 1 or equil synthetic oil? Any people notice any difference?
Thanks.
Thanks.

You can probably do a search here to find more info, but I've been running Mobil 1 for the past 47k miles (1st oil change at 3k miles and then every 5k after that). Everything is great.

I switched to Mobil1 after 10K miles (first oil change was at 5K mi. using Honda oil). Can't say I notice a difference in performace but I've been getting pretty good gas mileage. A lot of members have done the switch to Mobil1. Michael Wan, our local oil guru, recommends Havoline 5W-30 and oil changes every 5K mi. and you'll be fine.

By far the main advantage of synthetics is extended drains, if you plan to change oil at 5k or less good dino (Havoline is at the top of thst heap) makes sense. The added advantages of sythetics are with lots of high RPM driveing (track work) and poorly designed engines that tend to have hot spots etc that cause coking and sludge.
Synthetics are a mixed bunch today, you can call oils with group III basestock true synthetic, it is highly refined dino. There is much debate on whether M1 continues to be full IV/V basestock since they lost the lawsuit to keep IIIs from being sold as full synthetics. It is somewhat irrelavent since it does great on UOAs. If you want the best performing synthetics seek out German Castrol, expensive but backs it up with the numbers, but it is expensive.
Bottom line if you plan to change the oil at 5K or less use a good dino, if you plan to track the car or cruise in second gear all day on the highway or plan to try to get 400K out of the engine synthetics make sense.
In the end this is a premium/regular kinda interweb argument, there is no black and white answers, just shades of gray, despite the fact every pundit thinks he has the only right answer.
