Octane consensus

I know this may be a repeated thread but I can't find the original thread. Anyways, what octane do you guys normally put in. I live in S.D. and gas prices are high. I have over 700 miles so far and have been putting 91octane. Has anyone been using 87 or 89 on their car? I just wanna know if anyone experiences low performance with a lower octane. Thanks y'all!!

why does it seem so hard for people to accept and use the octane that the engine needs?

try this one (of many)

Even I have accepted the necessity of 91 octane, and I've got a pretty thick head (and thin wallet).

if gas milage is your concern why not buy a civic hybrid or insight or prius or something along those line? i don't get people that buy a high compression engine car and want to feed it an octane that isn't what it needs.

i also don't get the people that try to put higher octane gas then is required as well. that is just plain idiotic. and they think it gives more power to the car. morons.

Only 93 Octane Sunoco for my baby

Listen to DEVO, don't even contemplate using anything lower than 91.

Lets imagine 89 Octance costs $1.65 a Gallon and 91 costs
$1.85 per Gallon. One would typically put 14 Gallons of gas into a TSX to fill it up.

1.65 X 14 = $23.10
1.85 X 14 = $25.90

Lets imagine you fill up 52 times a year (once a week)

23.10 X 52 = $1201.20
25.90 X 52 = $1346.80

So you saved $145.60 a year. Is is worth it?

California may be an exception because gas prices are higher, but in much of the U.S. $0.20 is the differential between 87 octane and 91/93 octane. 89 is typically only $0.10 less than 91/93, so actually even less money is saved by using 89.

another gas thread?

Is the concept of putting in 91+ in your brand new TSX so complicated that there has to be 10+ threads about it?

Take it easy on the NooB he did say he searched for the original

Besides, maybe having 10+ threads that reiterate that the TSX needs 91+ Octance will finally convince people of this fact.

It convinced me.

Also boo2, even Consumer Reports - a group that is very concerned with costs and value - says to use 91 in cars that say they need it. They chalk it up as a strike against those cars in comparisons. They are also very much against using 91 in cars made for 87, so I think they pay attention to the issue.

Maybe in addition to a FAQ, we should have a separate forum entitled "Octane Insecurity."
