Very interesting thread! I had second thoughts for a whole nano-second when I saw that pic, but then remembered what turned me off of the S60 I tested:

1) Lack of steering feedback - you have to upgrade to the speed sensitive steering for it to feel 'sporty' (++$)
2) Lack of manual tranny in low-pressure turbo - had to upgrade to T5 package and get high-pressure (no power in base model) +$$
3) No leg room in backseat
4) Result: $+$$=$$$ (translation: mucho)

But then again, as ALFA stated, the S60 isn't competing against TSX (Sorry Larch, I also disagree)

If the S40 AWD sport model can resolve 1, 2 and 4, hmmmm.... Ah hell, what I really want is an S60R in a S40 body/price

How not?

To me, the S60 is one of the several closest comps to the TSX.

Actually this is an interesting question in itself, and it's surprising we haven't had a thread devoted to this:

WHAT ARE THE TOP 5 COMPS FOR THE TSX, AND IN WHAT ORDER?

Here's my list (well, actually I have to give 9, can't help it).
The list isn't in the order of how good the cars are, just in the order of similarity to the TSX as I see it:

1. Saab 9-3
2. Mazda 6
3. Audi A4
4. VW Passat
5. Volvo S60
6. Accord coupe (!)
7. Infiniti G35
8. BMW 325i
9. Lexus IS300

It's an interesting exercise, because each person's list would show how important the various factors about a car are to him in deciding what the car is like.

But however you slice it, I don't see why you wouldn't consider the S60 a comp for the TSX. It's a VERY CLOSE comp.

there's a volvo next door, a soccer mom drives it...

Since I couldn't take the suspense any more, I went and did it:

I evaluated a V40 during my car research before settling on the TSX. If the S40 is anything like the current V40, there is no rear legroom. At least in the TSX you can seat an adult behind the driver's seat without inconveniencing the driver.

Also, Volvo is being utilized heavily as an "R&D" center for Ford. This means that Volvo gets more funding to do the cool stuff they do with their cars, and Ford's mainstream lineup gets to benefit in the form of cool safety features, electronics, and the "body-designer-on-loan program". So, you will actually see more "volvo" in Ford - Case in point: The Ford Futura you see below:

The Futura is a Mazda 6 chassis, Ford Duratec engine, and penned by a former Volvo designer.

Overall, I am quite pleased with the symbiotic nature of Ford's relationship with its subsidiaries. In contrast to what GM is doing with SAAB, this is a great relationship.
I like the Futura waaayyy better than the new S40.

Actually, I'd have probably seriously considered the Ford 500 Sedan that's coming next year, being a Ford fan...Oh well, I'm perfectly happy with my TSX.

That S40 sure looks like a IS300 from the rear angle shot. The interior looks crappy, but will probably be altered somewhat when it comes to the US (note the built-in phone pad - real cool feature that we have on our S80 T6 in Singapore, but not a viable option in the US).

The only way I'd consider trading my TSX for the S40 would be if the S40 came in an "R" package like the new S60-R.

Volvo's comeback?

The picture of the upcoming S40 looks hot, the XC90 SUV is probably the best looking one on the road, and now look at this V90. I like it a lot.

That new S40 looks hot, but only in sport form. The non-sport looks pretty tame.

In general, I agree with you Xer. But as long as the European lines can hold onto their air of "premium-ness" vs. Japanese cars, status-conscious Americans will still flock to them regardless of inferior reliability.

Car consumers do not make buying decisions based solely on practical/rational measures.
