New Record: 580 miles (932KM) with one tank: 39mpg

Broke my own record and possibly everyone else's (except that alien named Sauceman!)

Coasting and basic hypermiling was the name of the game. Driving in 6th gear and neutral as much as possible, plus avoiding unnecessary stops helped achieve an astonishing 39mpg in mixed city/highway driving.

No tricks, no dangerous games, no shutting off of the car while in motion(a big NO NO) and certainly no intention of pissing other drivers off. Just simple effecient driving. The TSX is one amazing car.

.

.
.

Price of Premium 91 Octane gas (Shell VPower)
.
.

.
.

The amount of fuel the car took to fill up and the dollar value (OUCH!)
.
.

.
.

The range shown in MID right after fill up (not bad!)
.
.

.
.

After fill-up, I drove for about 12KM and got the range up to 982KM!!!!! This means if I keep up the driving style I will make it to 1000KM(621 miles) with my next tank. That's the goal, so let's see if I succeed.

I'm so proud of myself for staying comitted to effeciency throughout the whole tank. It sure feels good to beat the hell out of EPA numbers!

Cheers

Super impressive. I've been advocating for about a decade now that the biggest impediment to having much more efficient transportation is the fact that people are controlling the vehicles. If the vehicle was computer controlled we could be doing much more with the same amount of fuel and what you did here is proof of that. There's more to the whole idea than just that but I won't junk up your thread with it.

Congrats and well done. Keep it up if you can wrest that right foot away from the gas pedal long enough. The TSX is good at making me not do that.

I can barely get 39 average when I reset the mid before getting on the freeway then setting cruise control at 70. Unless you go slower than 70, but I can't go much slower than 70 or I get impatient.

Wow, that is impressive. And kind of depressing for me personally since my mixed driving results in a best of 8.7L per 100km or 26.6 MPG. I couldn't begin to fathom 39MPG.

See my post directly above yours about ruinous effects of the human operator on fuel efficiency. Cruise control is not the best way to get good fuel economy.

I never even went over 28mpg. I wonder what kinda miles I would get if i just rolled on the freeway going 60mph and a long road trip to no where with no stops.

wow, that's impressive. i try to drive really slow and slow down way ahead of time before stops and the most that i could get is approx. 32 MPG. could it be becuase i have an auto? i know with a manual you could coast to a stop in neutral, which may help the MPG numbers.

This is funny. There are two groups on this forum: one tries to make their cars faster with mods; the others see how calmly they can drive their cars, to get the best mileage. I'm part of that latter group.

It doesn't seem like the two would meet... but then some mods should improve mileage so...?

I guess I misjudged. I only got 570. I was 10 miles short. Oh well.

Not really. I'm reading from others on the board that when you're coasting down and not using the gas, the injectors close or something. Basically, using no more gas than you would in neutral.

There's a third group ... seeing how FAR they can go on a tank ... how far into the "(E)" light they dare go.... Not that it does the engine (and fuel pump) any good.

Sort of fun in the same way that lighting each other's farts in summer camp was fun.

Actually, when you're coasting in gear, the spinning of the gear spins the engine, eliminating the need for combustion. When you're in neutral, there's no gear to spin, so the engine must be combusting...I think...

I'm curious if it matters which gear you're coasting. Maybe coasting in a higher or lower gear reduces the resistance?

A lower gear will always have more resistance. Case in point, you shift down to keep your speed down when going down long hills.

1.485 a litre? where are you! I pay 1.544 here! Probably because of that carbon tax..
39mpg...impressive. And you still had another 9 liters in the tank when you filled it up!
It all depends on how you drive. I've only gotten 452 miles on one tank so far, but I've only had it for 2 weeks!

We've discussed this in another thread, let's see... this is it were we talk about coasting. DuckDodgers found in the service manual that fuel cutoff is at about 1000rpm, that is, coasting above this point you are not consuming any fuel, below this the fuel kicks back in, probably because lugging would be that much worse with no combustion.

You're right - when you pop it into neutral and coast, the motor of course has to use fuel to idle.

IMHO, there are still some times when neutral coasting is more efficient - like down a long hill where you'll pick up speed in neutral but engine braking would slow you down. It's illegal though...

You could either aim to keep revs above 1000, in which case you have no fuel usage but get engine braking, or let it drop below and get somewhat less (but also potentially lug the motor).

You'd have to be going pretty slow to even get 6th below 1000 rpm. And by the way, you can't lug the engine if it's not burning any gas. Lugging happens when the engine is spinning so slow that when combustion occurs near top dead center, the crank almost wants to spin backwards as the piston is pushed down. It puts a lot of stress on the wrist pin and piston skirts. If bad enough it can mess up the cylinder walls by cocking the piston to one and grinding the skirts into it.

Without combustion though, there is no lugging.

Even without combustion the engine will continue to draw in and expel air and compressing the air will act to slow the engines rotation.

Yeah, that's engine braking. Lugging is different. You get lugging for instance when you let out the clutch without applying enough throttle.

(I realize you probably know this, I just want to make it clear for any one reading this thread later)

Okay that makes sense to me, after all there would be no piston-top load without a combustion event. Thanks too for that description of the kinematics/kinetics of lugging b/c I was not clear exactly what was being loaded and why it was bad. However, below 1k rpm the fuel kicks back in so where I was concerned about lugging (at very low RPMs) is still valid?

Just stay out of 6th when you're going below 20mph and you'll be fine. Even then to load the piston up enough to get it to lug you'd have be opening the throttle at low speed in a high gear. I think any one who's been driving this car for any time at all knows there isn't going to be any available torque in that situation anyway.

Check it...he's putting it in by liters not gallons which means he isn't in the US which means there is a good chance he's paying significantly more.

I've only gotten that low once, when I was driving on 6" of snow or more the whole tank and it was 100% city. But I'm not normal.

Yup, gas is significantly more expensive in Canada. I'd be pretty damned happy if I got 900+ km to a tank. I'd be damned happy if I got 700km! I came really close to hitting 600km once and I was happy, but 900?!?! Man, I gotta try harder.

Synthethic,

what mods if any do you have to your car? You running synthethic oil?........maybe corresponding to less drag on the motor...
