Question Need help: Thinking of getting a TSX in NJ... but what's up with insurance?

Hi all,

I'm new to the board, so I thought I might introduce myself and get some help at the same time.

I'm currently in upsate NY but will be moving to NJ soon to start a new job. With my new job, I'm treating myself to a new car which just happens to be a TSX! (I'd like a carbon grey, auto, navi to be exact)

The problem is, I've been trying to look into getting insurance for the TSX... and I've found out that Jersey is completely screwed up compared to the rest of the country! I was going to get insurance in NY and just move to NJ, but apparently I'd lose my coverage. I could've had a great rate with Geico, but they refuse to cover NJ.

I had no idea insurance was such a hassle there. It's also really weird that no one can give me a quote over the phone 'cuz of NJ paperwork.

Anyway... anyone got any suggestions? What insurance companies are good in Jersey? Thanks!

I have been a Liberty Mutual customer for life and they have been extremely good to me. Low rates, fast claim payment, capable contacts. I and my family have a long record with them.

Are they accepting new customers though, that is the question...

I just moved to NJ too and got insurance for my TSX through Liberty Mutual. Not cheap, but I was happy to get it anyway.

Thanks for the replies so far. iamhomin: I'm 29.

Liberty Mutual sounds interesting. I'll look into getting a rate quote from them.

Just to compare: Geico quoted me $570 for 6 months in upstate NY.

Did somebody say NJ insurance?

$2900/yr - First Trenton - at the time i was 26/single/no record. I am recently married and expect it to go down quite a bit.

For the record, I was paying $2000 less in NC for the brief time I was there with my TSX (everyone else here knows this, since I bitch about it a lot)

McGriddle - try contacting Commerce Bank Insurance Services - they are a broker and may find you a decent quote. www.commerceonline.com

NJ Insurance

edit: FYI, it may take you awhile to get insurance once you move here. An insurance agent I dealt with advised NOT telling my NC insurance company that I was moving until I had arranged for NJ insurance.

I've been living in the city without a car for the past 7 years so I didn't have prior insurance when I moved to NJ. Clean record. 31 years old. Single. And I'm paying 2400/yr with 1000 deductible. Hopefully it will go down next year.

NJ insurance bites arse. I pay $1850/year living in CENTER CITY, Philadelphia for $500 deductible and full coverage. Right in the *middle* of a friggin huge metropolis with a new TSX. I almost moved to a nice, safe surburb in South NJ (Cherry Hill) and was quoted $3500 for the same full coverage from my agent. Suffice it to say, I am not moving to NJ! BTW, I use State Farm. I have heard they have high rates, but they've always been great to me and my family.

That is sad - I think I'm a good case that even PARKING in Center City is not safe for cars

I'm assuming you work in Philly - you'd probably save more money than insurance would cost you just in reduced city wage tax alone (taxed at lower rate + NJ taxes reimburse you partially).
