Wow - you nerds are impressive

I average 22mpg - I calculate it in my phone after most tanks. Got 30mpg a few times on road trips.

Why is it that we have 17+ gallon tanks, but it goes to empty at gallon 13.5 or 14? 3 extra gallons is a LOT of miles. Isn't "post-empty" usually 1.5 gallons or something?

How low below empty does the fuel meter go, just out of curiosity?

Thanks,
Jon

For safety reasons.

If your car stalls due to insufficience in gas, it'll damage your catalysct<sp>. Not only that it's convenient.

About the same mileage as I get in my 5AT, though you have much wider variation. I keep a big fat Excel sheet and my average has been 25.5 MPG (calculated) or 27.3 MPG (computer-reported) over 25,027 miles so far. For the last few months, I've been driving like a jackass, plus I've been driving friends/coworkers around, which has hurt mileage.

Today, I drove until the debug screen said I had something like 1.5 G left (probably the closest I've come to empty). The needle said empty, but the range estimator said I had maybe 36 mi left, which is accurate. I used to take each with a grain of salt, but I trust the range estimator now.

I guess your numbers must be calculated, because the computer only offers 1 decimal place.

Most of my mileage is mixed city/highway with the occasional road trip. Got a trip planned from LA to Big Sur this weekend so I hope to get some pure highway numbers for comparison.

Current mileage on the 6 MT: 27k miles
Trip to VA over Dec. 2004 recorded 33.87 MPG, car fully loaded.
Typically mileage during the week: 23-26 MPG (depends on how heavy my foot gets around traffic)

Damn, some of you havent broken 30 mpg?

I'd expect more out of a 4 cylinder. Heck my "ancient" C32 will do 24 to 28 mpg in mixed driving.

70-72 when I was being cautious about speeding....and 85-90 when it was clear sailing. So its not like i set the cruise or anything...

THE TSX ROCKS!
Just drove from Salt Lake to LA. Averaged about 74mph and 29.9mpg. Lots of ups and downs on that road including some serious mountain sections, and quite a bit of rough pavement as well which tends to hurt mileage. Also hit some serious patches of fog so I was a bit more up and down on the speed than I would have liked. Normally the speed would have been around 80-82 on that route. I usually shoot for 10mph over the limit, which means 85 most of the way.

I just filled up with 13.62 gallons and I went 321 miles on the tank. Which = 23.5 mpg??!!

wtf, i thought this car was much better on gas. OH yeah, and its 80% hwy and 20% city driving.

Maybe its the Costco gas @ 93 octane?? I will try Costco gas again and be real gentle with the throttle this time. Then i'll try Exxon or Amaco @93 octane and drive conservative as well. we'll see if it truely is crappy gas at costco or not.

23mpg isn't too bad. I get that on average but if I do a long trip on the highway I can break 30mpg.

I usually get low 20's probably because my average speed per refuel is usually 24 mph (MPH from history info from Navi trip computer). I get by city driving.

I don't drive the car hard and after my first fill up i got 27.89 mpg. I will see if this holds for my next fill up. I only have 650 miles on it right now so I'll post results in the next few days.

Costco typically buys their gas on the local spot market, meaning it comes from pretty much the same sources as most other local gas in your area. Unlikely you see much difference in mileage. Additives may be different, and those may impact your car's long term performance, but are unlikely to have much to do with short-term efficiency.

With my 5AT, I can sometimes manage 32-33mpg on the highway, but that's with the cruise control set at 60, no traffic and a smooth road. More realistic highway numbers for normal conditions here in LA are 24-25. On longer drives outside the city I am usually in the 29-30mpg range, usually taking somewhat of a hit for going fast.

For mixed highway/city driving I'm usually in the 20-22mpg range.

For the most part, I drive in the city...I'm averaging only 17-19mpg. In fact, I've never had anything better than 22mpg, and that consisted of a trip to Milwaukee...

Sorry about the size.

Averaging about 50/50 right now in terms of highway/city - I do long drives, but also a lot of short drives.

All fillups are at Chevrons. All with 92 octane gas.

any way you can have two graphs? looking at four lines is hard to read.

what is the difference between the dotted and solid lines?

edit: nevermind, i see the difference (trend) but splitting into two would be lovely

kthxbye

Here's my mileage after our trip to Big Sur last weekend:

First fill-up: LA to San Luis Obispo, mostly freeway driving, but some stop-n-go traffic, average speed approx. 60mph, 257 mi., 29.3mpg
Second fill-up: San Luis Obispo to Big Sur to San Luis Obispo, coast highway driving with lots of turns and semi-frequent stops, average speed approx. 45mph, 217 mi., 27.1mpg
Last fill-up: San Luis Obispo back to LA, all freeway driving, no traffic, average speed approx. 76mph, 243 mi., 32.0 mpg.

I averaged 29.5mpg for the whole trip and I think if I had kept my speed down on the last leg to around 65 or 70 I could have gotten around 33-34mpg.

Here are some pics I took.

Sweet pics jlukja!

Back on topic, recently had my worst gas mileage 16MPG My average speed for the 9 gals was 18 mph. I think it was mainly attributable to city driving and reduced speed for the inclement weather we had last week.

Another roadtrip, this time to San Fancisco and the wine country.

1st fill-up: Long Beach to work in downtown LA then crawling through LA rush hour traffic on a rainy Thursday afternoon. Traffic breaks past Valencia and its cruising northbound I5 at about 75-78mph until we fill up in Santa Nella. It rains the whole drive. 308 miles, 10.2 gallons, 30.2mpg.

2nd & 3rd fill-up: Santa Nella to San Fancisco, driving around town before heading north over the Golden Gate bridge, touring around Santa Rosa, Sonoma, Napa, Glen Helen, Healdsburg, Glen, Sebastapol, Bodega Bay. Stop n' go traffic in SF with lots of hills, highway speeds vary between 40 and 70 mph, lots of stops. 465 miles, 17.1 gallons, 27.2mpg.

4th & 5th fill-up: Santa Rosa down US101 to I580 to I5 all the way to LA. All freeway and highway driving averaging 60-70mph in the cities and about 80mph on I5 until we hit rain coming into LA (around Valencia) then intermittent bumper-to-bumper and avg. speed about 45-50mph. 470 miles, 14.8 gallons, 31.8mpg.

Very happy with the overall mileage , averaged 29.5mpg for the trip. Pics and driving impressions to come.

Good stuff.

I gave up on my part. Too many half-fills makes it hard to give out acurate data, so I'll refrain.

I'll just keep on posting about the good mileages I do when they occur.

Got owned big time this winter while the emissions-control parts were down.
