Missing 2nd when revving high.

I noticed recently that everytime I rev my engine up above 5 or so in 1st gear I always have trouble getting it into 2nd quickly, I end up grinding my gears... :'(

What's my problem?

Anyone else notice this?

man.. i do that alot.. it makes you feel like a jackass but it happens. i think if you only mess up once while you do it, then no problems occur.

You just have to be more careful and deliberate. The excitment of reving that high gets in the way of your shifting technique.

you're probably letting go of the clutch too quickly before the gear engages. grinding gears is a horrible thing for your tranny. are you new to manuals?

make sure you're really good before you start taking it to redline, especially take care not to mis shift when redlining third - don't accidently throw it in second. i know a few people who have done that.

i can take my car to 7000 rpm all day and not miss a gear, takes practice and caution.

I dunno about tsx yet. Mime is still a baby so no rev it yet! But some e46(including mime), MB C230 and IS300 they all grinding like crazy even when brand new! and I am sure the clutch was fully pressed. It happened on my brother, my wife & I. It never happened on my old Civic & lude. Also all German manual are so notchy to shift too.

You should never hear a grinding noise from your transmission. Every time you do it's like taking 20,000 miles off its life expectancy. You have to be very deliberate with your shifts and ensure that you are in gear before you let out the clutch. If you are shifting qickly it will take more effort because the syncros have to work harder. Quick, high-reving shifts are harder than normal city driving.

Isn't this a tad bit of an exaggeration? I'm not advocating grinding gears in any way shape or form, but it happens.

ohhhhhh yeeaaaahhhhhh i noticed it. It scared me too cause I used to redline my sister's integra all the time without ever grinding. I thought I was losing my shifting skills, but found out that it's the car! I figured out how to go 1 - 2 redline without grinding now though. Took me a month to figure it out and get it down almost perfect, but what you do is you rev past the redline. I usually rev to around 7300 and then switch to 2nd, and the shift is a lot smoother and easier! Before when i redline, i used to go right to the 7100 and then try to shift and there would be this small bumpy feeling in the shifting from 1 - 2 and then I hear my gears grind. But now when i go a lil past the redine and shift, the car shifts much smoother. Go try it out right now! Don't be afraid to just step on it past the redline! it won't hurt your car.

There's no difference between shifting at 7300 or 7100. As I said before, you've got to make a firm shift when you change gears regardless of engine speed but you'll have to shift harder at higher RPM because the syncros have to work harder.

If your car is grinding when you have the clutch fully to the floor and you change gears either your syncros are damaged or you don't have the clutch fully disengaged.

but that's a totally different from a grinding sound. but it's true dan, if he's grinded like crazy before, he could have wasted his synchros, which would cause it to grind. bad news.

i think it is operator error, i don't know why anyone is having such a hard time - floor the gas, take it to redline, let go of gas, press clutch to engagement points, switch to second, let go of clutch, press gas.

Because after awhile you get used to not having to push the clucth all the way in and sometimes you mis-judge it..

I've done the oops tiny grind at least once or twice in the three stick cars I have owned.. I didnt have them for a long time (2 years, 3 years) so I cant say if the whole 20,000 mile thing is true.. I think it has a lot to do with what you do when you hear the noise.. The times it has happened to me as soon as i heard the grind I punched the clutch and pulled the shifter back to the center, Double clutched and put it back in gear and gently put it back in.

If instead when you hear a grind you try to muscle your way into getting the teeth to line up.. yeah, i could see that taking some serious lifetime expectancy out of your car.

wow, thanks for the replies! I didn't come on expecting that many.

I never have any trouble getting from 2-3 when I'm revving above 5k, it's just 1-2. I guess I will take my time the next time I'm shifting from 1-2.

thanks!
