Metal on Metal Screeching Sound From Rotor Guard

As I was leaving work today my driver side Front wheel was making a LOUD metal on metal screeching sound. It was making the sound regardless of braking, driving forward or backward. After I parked the car and the rotor cooled I put my hand behind the rotor toward the bottom and pushed back the metal shield that is behind the Rotor out. The sound is now gone.

Has anyone ever had this happen? What would cause this rotor shield to bend?

Is this shield even necessary?

I have had this happen two different times. I just reached a screwdriver throught the spokes and bent back the dust shield. Not sure what causes this but it isn't a major issue, just bending it back usually solves the problem.

Rock/debris on the road could easily cause this. No biggie, just bend it back and off you go.
