The story starts with a trip to BJ's. Super deal on watermelons the other day so I picked up a couple. One of them explodes in my trunk on the way back, leaving watermelon juice everywhere. After a couple of hours in the heat, my trunk smells rancid. I do my best to clean it up, but nothing I had under my sink would stand up to that horrible smell. As Jerry Seinfeld did when he had an odor problem in his car, I brought mine over to a local detailer who power vac'd it and then set off an odor bomb. Trunk is damp from the cleaning so I leave it open to dry, but it was pretty damp around here so it didn't dry by sunset. I knew there was a little trunk light, but I didn't think it would kill the battery overnight, so I took the chance... I wake up this morning and my car battery is dead... and worst of all, THE SMELL IS STILL THERE. The detailer told me that if the smell was still there he'd try to do it again for me for free... I'm going to give that a shot and if that doesn't work then it's time to sell the car.

First things first, when your taking home fruits of such sizes such as watermelons, you never put it in the trunk. Instead you put it in the back seat floor. The amount of space is limited so the watermelons wont roll around much and less likely to explode. As for cleaning the trunk, I suggest you take out the carpet piece and let it air dry somewhere, preferably in the garage or backyard. Make sure to clean the stains and make sure it isn't sticky. As for the rest of the trunk, I would just get some small clean towels, damp them in some water, and wipe the surrounding areas of the trunk. You should give the carpet piece some time to air dry. You can try using a hair dryer if you please.

Use some carpet cleaner, spray around, let it soak. Use a dry/wet vacuum to fully dry it. Then go over the carpet w/ a steamer, it should get the carpet completely clean, thus no smell.
