i'm curious to try these (non-led) bulbs as license plate lights:
http://www.hoen-usa.com/city2.htm
they are advertised to match the hoen xenonmatch bulbs which are pretty close to the HID.
pictures from hoen's website:

i emailed him again and had to wait a few days for another response...
he finally said ok it's been processed with tomorrow's shipment so it will be shipped out the next morning....(i got the message on a thursdays so it should've been sent out friday morning right?) WRONG
he has yet to reply to any of my emails after that about the status, or anything!!
that was supposed to be march 2nd that it shouldve been shipped out. it's the 13th and still nothing.
i paid for the lights on feb 9th!!!!
cross your fingers when you order
i know the guy isnt responding on purpose because i see feedback comments from today!!! which means he's selling still
i'm about to ruin his 100% record...which i thought would've been enough to finally get it into his thick head to send them but NOPE

and for the record...tec_toyz now has 4 negative feedback comments so it wasn't just me
they've all not received the product as described. i'm escalating it to a claim to get a refund

I purchased the 1-LED Super White from superbrightleds.com for my license plate and I didn't like it because it had a bluish hue to it. Are there any recommendation for true Super White, like the one's Lexus come stock?

Thanks for the pics and guide. I probably would've been out there for at least an hour trying to figure out how to get the housings out. Nice job.

Took advantage of the warm Thanksgiving weather to replace my license plate bulbs today. I used bulbs from autoillumination.com, specifically the "SMT Tower" bulbs (the first bulbs listed on their web site under the 194-type bulbs.)
These bulbs use 5 surface-mount LEDs and look to be very well made (in terms of construction and base material.) We'll see how long they last. They fit beautifully within the housing, and are VERY bright, lighting up the whole area between the tail lights, the top of the bumper, the ground behind the car... Might be a bit too bright, but they look great - I think I'll get used to them
I also found an even better use for this particular bulb - replacing that sorry yellow trunk light. I ordered the "SMT Tower III" bulb for this location, which fits and works great, but the above 5-LED bulb is brighter and illuminates the trunk evenly. This light may not be seen by others, but it is a big improvement IMO.

Okay, LEDs are good lights but empirically aren't so reliable for the important job of license plate lights. In other words, problems are commonly reported regarding LEDs for the license plates. I was wondering if there are any other non-LED lights that produce a similar white as to get rid of the ugly yellow. I was looking at the Hoens maybe. Does anybody have any knowledge to share about this?

Hoens have blue glass which block out the yellow light, reducing overall brightness, and therefore need more wattage to get back to the brightness you need. These bulbs get hot. Hoen recommends against installing these bulbs in the little, confined space for our license plate bulbs. Many here have used them, most have no problem, but I recall at least one poster saying that he had melted his covers.

I have a pair of extra license plate LEDs in cool white color if anyone is interested. I just ask for standard shipping cost. PM me if interested.
The project is easy and makes the plates look pretty cool.
