Inexperienced sales staff

Hi,

I was having my TSX's oil changed yesterday. To kill some time, I went into the showroom to get a closer look at the TL. Within a few minutes, a salesperson approached me. I told him that I owned a TSX and was just looking. He asked if my TSX was new.
My response: Aren't they all, pretty much?
His reply: What year is it?
My reply: Huh? It's a TSX.
His reply: [Blank stare.]
My reply: 2004 is the first model year.
His reply: I just started.

You'd think that little bit of info would be important to know before hitting the sales floor, now wouldn't you!?

Its like that at almost every car dealer. I went into a Toyota dealer last spring to look at the Camry XLE V6 and I knew more about the car than the salesman. After owning him several times on many things about the car, he got so embarassed he walked off and went back to his office.

I don't why some salesman are allowed to sell cars when they don't know much about it.

I guess everyone has to start somewhere... A little product training doesn't hurt though. When I was car shopping last summer, I ran into extreme cluelessness on the part of a Mazda salesman (was shopping the 6). He kept on spewing so much mis-information it was really frustrating.

There are times when an honest "I don't know" is far more helpful than a guess or a lie. I can understand if someone doesn't know some fact off the top of their head and says so, but I can't respect someone who tries to BS their way through and pretend they do when they don't.

Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honesty is hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you

That's nothing! I had a Honda salesman tell me that the Accord Coupe 6MT was AWD!

You've never seen a person leave a dealership as fast as me.

You should've seen the guy selling us a RAV4. He basically had one of those little notebooks that you thought was really cool when you were still in high school but never had any use for it because you never took notes and always crammed during home room. Ahhh, memories...

It's scary sometimes how little the salespeople know about their product. What's even worse is being female and talking to a salesman about a car, knowing more than him, and still having him treat you like a "dumb female".

When my wife and I were shopping around for her WRX, we stopped at a dealership in New Britain, CT...Schaller Subaru if anyone is from around here. She wanted the Rally Blue...you know, the color everyone has:'( and saw none on the lot. When we proceded to ask the saleswoman if they could aquire one for us, she replied "That car dosn't come in blue...." I was so pissed off knowing that she was playing the "we get more money if we sell one of our cars" angle that I started screaming at her...not a good scene. I hate being taken for a fool. I guess it's a military thing. My wife did an about-face, not sure if she was mad too or if it was the scene I was causing....

I went to the Honda dealership today to buy a part. The parts manager told my that I had to go to an Acura dealership because Acura is not compatible with Honda parts.

BTW, I was trying to buy an 03' accord wiring harnest for my radio.

It just goes to show, that you can be succesfull in car sales without knowing a damn thing about cars! You'll simply be ridiculed (and deservedly so) on forums like this.

Colin is absolutely right.

For every person that reads this forum there are probably hundreds (thousands?) who buy cars like they buy their clothing-- trusting brands that they've heard of and look good in.

The automotive industry spends millions of dollars (and yen and pounds and whatever) to sway public opinion without consumers making informed choices. In a system like that, persuasive salespeople are much more important than knowledgeable salespeople.

I had a Honda salesmen try to convince me that the 03 SiR's (Si's) were selling extremly well when there were no less than 14 of them sitting on the lot and in the showroom. While not exactly a story of stupidy I don't like people trying to take me for a fool either.

Acura dealer owner tried to tell me their were'nt enough TSX's coming to Canada when I bought so there was'nt much wiggle room on the price. I called BS and turned out to be right.
