Im pretty disappointed!
Hi,
I have had my heart set on getting a Acura TSX. I currently have a 2000 Accord V6 show car. My daily is a POS '95 Chevy Lumina. I have been looking at a car that is going to get good gas mileage. I was looking into Honda Civic, Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry. Thoes cars are really not my style. But I always wanted to get a Acura TL but I can't afford that with all my other bills. So naturaly my second choice was the Acura TSX. I fell in love with the TSX and was planning on getting one right after Christmas. The reason I am upset is that it only takes Preimum gas.
My question is what kind of gas mileage do you get out of a full tank of gas? I drive 40 miles round trip to work and back each day. I would say half of that is Highway. Right now I am putting in about $45 of gas each week in the lumina (87 octane. The Lumina is a POS that leaks oil and engine light is always on so i know it doesn't get good gas mileage. I really want to get the TSX cause I will not be happy in anything else.
Thanks for reading.

Gas mileage, generally, is really good in this car. I have been getting over 26 mpg in suburban (no highway) driving. A 4 cyl. Accord will probably be similar and take regular gas, but if you think about it, it's not that much of a difference. The TL, which is more expensive, gets even lower mileage and also takes premium, so you wouldn't want that anyway.
There are tons of threads on this subject, do a search to bring them up.

Hope it helps ya a little!
On a side note, i go the train station and bck, 3.32 miles from my house with two periodic trips 28 miles round trip in a week and i average about 19-21 MPG, so that is why i assumed you'd be alittle higher than me as well, cause i don't have much highway at all.

You'll have to do more than describe mileage of your commute and mix of highway and surface streets. Most of my commute is on the highway but most of it is also bumper to bumper. I get closer to 20mpg in an 04 AT TSX.

You should check out this thread:
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...hlight=mileage
The TSX is an outstanding highway cruiser. Getting 425-475 miles from a tank of gas in straight highway driving is not uncommon for the 5AT or 6MT (31-36 mpg). City mileage will vary from 17 mpg to 27 mpg.
If the .20 cent difference between 87 and 91 octane is a factor, then you might want to stick with a Accord I-4. Same engine detuned for better economy, no fun factor at all.
Here is the math:
15,000 miles per year 21 mpg avg = 714.3 gallons used (using 87 octane)
15,000 miles per year 23 mpg avg = 652 gallons used (using 91 octane)
714.3 Gallons X $3.00 87 octane = $2,143 per year
652 Gallons X $3.20 91 octane = $2,086.4 per year
Difference of $56.50 cheaper overall per year for 91 octane compared to 87 Octane (assuming you lose a minimum of 1 ½ to 2 mpg because of using a lower grade).

Yeah I know how to search. My particular post was in hopes for you all to talk me into getting it anyway. Maybe with some good tips or suggestions on the gas. I really just want to "TALK" to you guys about this subject rather than reading someone elses topic. If you think I need to search and dont want to talk to me about it it's just as easy to pass this topic by and go to the next with out treating me like a dumb noob that post pointless topics.
I love the TSX and need some other type of opinion other than my wifes that is probably going to say " I dont think its a good idea" Afterr the shock of Premium gas I am getting just getting over it little by little. The gas prices seem to be droping at a nice rate. I even read on MSN yesterday that they dont dought that gas prices in a few years will go back down to $1.15 a gallon.
Thanks

well if you assume that mileage will remain equal because many cars can have the same milage even tho they require different grades of gas, it's around 150/yr for the difference... say you fill up once a week and it costs you 3 bucks/tank...
it's not a huge different to be honest...

My contention is that if you are concerned about the price difference between premium and regular gas, maybe you shouldn't be buying an Acura or any other luxuary model car. Not trying to be a dick, it's just that the price difference isn't that much so if it is a factor in the decision maybe you need to lower your style standards.

40 miles/day x 5 days/week = 200 miles/week
x 52 weeks = 10400 miles/year
I average 27mpg overall but lets say you will average 25mpg so
10400miles/25mpg = 416 gal.
The spread between 87 octane and 91 octane is usually 20 cents/gal. so
416gal x $0.20/gal = $83.20
So, assuming all else being equal you will pay $83.20 more over the course of a year for a car that gets 25mpg. If you use 87 octane in your TSX then your fuel economy will go down and the "savings" of using 87 octane will go down as well. Of course, if you go with a Civic you might get 34mpg combined and your "savings" will increase. I guess my point is that it'll cost you roughly $80-$100 more for fuel annually. If you're considering a $28K-$30K automobile is it worth it to worry about an additional $80-$100/year.

I tried the reverse and started using 91 octane in my Accord to see how much my mpg would increase. I'm getting 1 1/2 mpg better in combined city driving (60% hwy) and a little over 2 mpg better on the highway (comparing 87 to 91 octane on a 9 year old Accord LX 4dr).
From the math above, there isn't really a big $$ savings/expense over 12 month. There is a time savings; it would mean 2-3 less trips to Sam's club waiting 10-20 minutes to gas up each time.
I think the Honda/Acura engines would show a more noticeable difference in octane level overall gas mileage compared to Ford/GM/Dodge counterparts.

plus what MrGold posted it seems to pan out anyways. I am glad that I started this topic. I feel much better about getting that TSX.
Its not that I cant afford the gas. When I started looking at cars I was looking into Hybrids and cars that get great gas mileage. But to be honest I dont see myself driving thoes ugly ass cars. Plus I would hate to turn smug. Gas prices are starting to get better anyways.
one more question maybe some of you can answer for me before I call an insurance agent. How much do you all pay for insurance. I am aware that mine is not going to be the same cause of everyones is different. So if you are Married, about 25 years of age what are you paying per mo. in insurance?
Thanks for all the info fellas.

Sorry to deflect your question, but there is a HUGE thread about "what are you paying for insurance on your TSX" with dozens of useful entries, and I'm sure you don't want us doing that all over again. Just search it
Also, some asshat took it on a big tangent about page 3 i think and there is some bashing, but it comes back and has a lot of useful info in it in general.

DISREGARD previous post about insurance! thanks

just get the TSX since at max its probably 100-200 dollars a year more. And at the pump thats an extra $3-$4 which is pretty reasonable IMO. As others mentioned before people can afford a 27K car but cant spend 3-4dollars more at the pump shouldnt be driving a 27K car.

Stop thinking so much. The dollar difference in the end is not worth talking about. Go buy your new ride, enjoy the new car smell, open up the sunroof and go for a long drive.

That's not the point. The point is that A LOT of people hate shelling out that extra $4-7 dollars per fillup, especially when other 4-bangers gulp down 87 octane w/out problems.

you dont have to fill up your car on premium gas everytime, but its a high compression engine (so I've been told) so it will get better gas mileage with premium gas.. go figure
#36
I think with the 04-05's you CAN put regular but at the cost of some performance. Not sure about the 06's though.
Also, if you're hondatafied (like me), forget about regular (not that i'd ever consider using regular), you're now a slave to premium!

what this dude said. 91 octane is not that expensive! i don't think its cheaper in the long run..but its not going to kill you and plus you get awesome performance. my tsx purrs like a kitten with premium.
