I4 Questions
I love my 3 day old TSX but I still have some questions about the engine. Is my 05 TSX driven by a timing belt or chain? What is the longevity of this engine. Dose preformance decrease over time? Is the maintainance higher for this engine then say a v6 accord? Thanks for the info

a. chain
b. they've been known to run for hundreds of thousands of miles
c. initially, until broken in, your performance will increase. Don't know about long-long term. The longest I've kept an I4 was my 91 Integra which ran fine until I sold it at 104,000mi.
d. don't know anything about the v6 accord.

Chain.
Depends how well you maintain it but typically the life of the car (200K+ miles).
All engines will net performance decrease over time, given wear on the pistons and seals. This engine is no different than any other type of engine.
Hard to compare 2 different engines, DOHC and SOHC, inline 4 and V6. Both are proven engines and shouldn't be any worse than the other.
Your questions are very open-ended, with lots of factors affecting the answer.

Thanks, I know they are open ended because I am not mechanically inclined. Thanks for answering my questions. I'm glad its a chain. I have never owned an I4 only bought a car with a V6. I had a 1988 Acura Legland 5 speed stick that I loved. I hope this car can do 220,000 miles that my Legland did.

The key to longevity for two given engines with similar driving styles put to them is oil pressure, quality of the metals and quality of the seals/rings. Honda is well known for building precision into its products so I would say that the metal quality and seals/rings quality at manufacture point is the same between the V6 and L4. But, I'm told the break in process has a major factor on the rings/seals as well. The oil you use and how often you change it is critical to your oil pressure. Generally, a V6 doesn't flow oil as well as the L4, so I'm told by a GM engineer, but usually L4's need to rev higher to build power so that causes wear and an eventual loss in compression. I know the 2.4 is a great engine because there is absolutely no valve tappet noise even when the motor is dead cold at start up, although its new, I've heard new GM and VW motors with significant valvetrain noises when cold. You're okay...no worries with the 2.4. Drive it like a maniac - meaning quick revs or high throttle when cold then you will limit your engines life.
