I laughed later at this...

Overall, my dealership experience when buying the TSX was awesome. (Criswell Acura in Annapolis)

HOWEVER! The salesperson, when I asked politely, "hey what's this little plastic cover next to the gear shift lever for?" (you know, the little tiny plastic door just to the left of the automatic shifter)...

Says he, "that's where the technicians hook up the computer to see the car's been driven. You know, how fast it's been driven and for how long, that sort of stuff."

I, being of bewildered mind, said, "oh ok."

Of course, later I realized when RTFM for myself, that little cover is where you unlock the MF transmission when it's locked. Then I proceeded to laugh hysterically. For many reasons and on many different levels.

I guess he was trying to put a scare into you. Stupid salesman.

But I was reading an article I thnk in C&D a while back about how there are little black boxes in all of todays cars. The black box is connected to your speedo and records your speed of travel. But it erases all data except for the last few miles or something like that I can't remember exactky. Someone was being charged with reckless driving and the prosecutor wanted to use the data as evidence the defendant was speeding. The defence lawyer of course was arguing against that evidence. Its pretty scary when even our driving speed gets recorded.

Yeup... but only certain models (Ford) have this device... not sure if honda has it. Anyway, the system records the last 7 seconds of travel (speed, rpms, g-force of impact, etc, brakes, etc...)

I believe there's also the function where the computer will record all the car's vitals for the last 5 seconds or so before the Airbags go off. There was a story about a guy in a new SunFire that got busted for killing people in a car he hit. The computer showed he was doing in excess of 100MPH and didn't even touch the brakes.

I remember that new story Domn was talking about. For cars that have it, I believe that it is tied into the airbag system because it has sensors to record speed so it knows how and when certain air bags should be deployed.

If you don't mind me asking, did Criswell give you a deal on the car? When I first enquired, they wouldn't take anything off so I moved on. Going out tomorrow to the varioud dealers to try to find the best deal.
