How much should i bargain for?

I see a used 2004 tsx with 27k miles, certified. The asking price is 24,000 and the car seems to be clean. Do you guys think I can get this car for around 20,000? I mean i know how to bargain for new cars, i don't know what to do when it comes to used. I am thinking about using full cash on payment as incentive to lower the price also.

I dont think you will be able to get a certified tsx for 24k. I think the best you will be able to do is 22,000. Dealers dont normally come down 4k on a used car.

But it doesnt make sense. Invoice 2004 is 24500. Given depreciation of viechle say 2.5k, thats already 22k for a new 2004 with depreciation. Given driven over 25k miles already, and cash incentive, you think they'll bring it down to at least 21k? I'm only looking to spend around 20k selling price but the market of used TSX's is rediculously high. I mean i see one with 6k miles for 26000, u can get a new 2005 for that price....

Yeah, that's one of the things I really hate about looking at used cars. Most places seem to really pad the prices. In some cars, they count all the extras, like upgraded radios, foglights, moonroof, etc., even though they probably wouldn't count much for those things on a trade-in. I agree with you -- if the used car is price too close to the new, who would buy the used?

If you don't like dealing with that, try to find out who's a more reputable dealer. There's a used car place near here that seems to put reasonable prices on everything, and then they don't haggle.

New '05s are going @ $25800, at least here in California.

First of all, carfax it and see if its been registered as a fleet vehicle. If it has, its one of their service loaners. Lots of those for sale around these parts. A 2004 automatic, without Navi, should be in the high 21s to low 22s. Offer that and nothing more.

You're right. Take it from an ex-autobroker, these cars are holding artificially high resale value right now. Still a seller's market, even for the used ones. This will subside after another 18 months or so.
