how much info does the navi hard drive hold???

hey guys

i was thinking of going to my acura dealer and seeing if my friend would let me borrow for a sec the navi disk from an 05 tsx so i can have the latest version

i was wondering how much info will it hold if i do the pop in of the new cd so it could store the info and then use mine everyday so that the navi runs since ive read on here that it will use the latest stored info eventhough i got the older version cd in the deck

let me know whats up thanks

I'm not quite sure I understand. What hard drive are you talking about? I didn't realize the NAV had a hard drive, just a DVD-ROM drive. I am pretty certain you cannot run the NAV without the DVD in the drive, as that is how it gets the map and other data.

If you put your friends DVD in your TSX, the firmware will be updated to the latest version, but it will still need that DVD for the data. You might be able to put your friends in your DVD-ROM drive, let it update the firmware and then when it is finished put in your old DVD. The mapping and other data will still be the same but your firmware will have the latest updates and changes. I am not positive that you can update the firmware with a new DVD and then go back to using the old DVD though.

There's no hard drive in any nav system yet. They all need the DVD for the map info and the firmware is in NVRAM in the system itself.

Yes, you could update the fiirmware but that won't help you out on missing maps added in later DVD releases. Firmware changes are only significant in cars like the 5 series where the whole car is controlled by firmware. In the case of the TSX only the nav and a few other functions are controlled by the nav screen - and I'd venture to guess those are not changing much if at all.

Plus, eventually the underlying nav hardware will probably be upgraded in future years so the firmware for an 06 TSX couldn't be loaded into an 04. This is probably less likely in the case of maps since the formatting of those has stayed pretty consistent through the years. You can take the latest version of Garmin mapping software and run it on a 4-5 year old Streetpilot - whereas the firmware for a new SP 2610 won't work on a SPIII cause the underlying hardware is completely different.

so borrowing an updated cd is not worth it?? (by borrowing i mean using my older disk everyday after updating the info from the new cd)

if i borrow the latest cd the maps of that cd wont be added to the system????

and if not what will it update ??????

There should be no benefit for borrowing the DVD. Spend the $185 to get updated map info if you want it.

I actually tried loading my friend's new firmware into my Navi and using my old DVD...it's a no go. I lost all street names (all streets were named "no name"). When I put my friend's dvd back in, the street names came back. I had to re-install my old firmware so I can use my dvd.

Update the firmware and copy the Navi DVD (dual layer). That should do the trick. Total cost, $10 for a blank DL DVD, provided you have a DL burner. If not, they run $60.

As the admin said in the other thread no piracy talk on here. Besides, people have already tried to copy the disc on a DL DVD and it didn't work.

That would depend on when those cars went on sale. For example I bought my 2004 TSX in April 2003. At that time I had the original firmware that came with the NAV. Later that Fall they had a newer NAV DVD that had newer firmware and database. So the only alternative for me if I wanted the latest update was to bend over and pay the $185 when they started selling it online in January 2004. The firmware change had a few graphical changes to the interface, changed the look of the AUDIO screens, changed voice commands, probably fixed some bugs etc... and of course the DVD had a newer map and POI database. Now on the latest 3.40B disc I really don't know if the firmware will be as big of a change as before, but for sure the map and POI database will be the latest.

If you are planning to buy a 2005 TSX in Canada make sure you confirm with your dealer that it has the latest NAV DVD available which should be at least 3.40B. At the very least it should be 3.40 and a letter after it since that was the Fall 2004 release. The Fall 2003 release was 3.30 and the Fall 2002 release (which I originally got) was 3.20. So now that I think of it maybe the 3.xx means the version of NAV since both the 2004 and newer TSX's and TL's use that version and the 05 RL and MDX use 4.xx and the digit after the . means the year of the database? (shrug)

I can't say for certain. But based on the fact that the version numbers for the 04 and newer TSX and TL's NAV DVD's are the same, I believe they use the same NAV hardware. The 05 RL and MDX also appear to use the same version of DVD which tells me those two models share the same NAV unit.
