How many quarts for automatic transmission drain and fill?

I'm about to drain and fill my tranny a couple of times. Do I need 3 quarts or 4 quarts to completely replace the fluid once? I've read/searched and heard mixed opinions. Don't want to buy more than I actually need.

do you have auto or manny tranny?
manny trannies do not have clutch packs and all the fluid will drain out in one shot..

auto trannies have clutch packs which will hold fluid and roughly 3qts will come out at a time

In a nut shell, THREE. Just to make certain, to maintain the correct level, which is midway, or a little above the two holes, when I drain my 2G TL, I use 3, 1/2 gallon, empty milk cartons. and measure the exact amount of fluid i removed. I fill the first jug, to the top, and the remainder of the used fluid, goes in the second. I than fill the third jug, with fresh fluid, to the exact same level, as shown in the second jug, of used fluid. I also have two separate dip sticks. One, which I painted the bottom 3", with flat black paint. and use it for checking the fluid level, only. Makes the dip stick, much easier to read. The reason I use this method, is because, once the transmission is OVER/UNDER filled, it's a pain, to get it right again! I also find that, the angle of the car, determines how much fluid comes out. Sometimes, I drain less than three quarts, sometimes more. I would buy the extra quart, just in case!

Mine is 3.5 qt to get to the max of the hot mark. I guess when the car is hot more fluid comes out.

2.9 quarts per the service manual.
As others have said, just use 3 quarts.
