How low do you go on a gas tank?

for many reasons but the main one is because by topping off your gas tank after the pump automatically turns off can damage a vehicle emissions system that re-burns fuel vapors.
The pump is designed to turn off when the fuel reaches a certain level, leaving room in the tank for the emissions system to operate correctly.
now, I underlined the word "can" because I've yet to see this problem occur but this is what the manufacturers and mechanics tell us can happen.

My gas meter broke.
I rely on my tachometer to tell me how many miles I drove on that tank.
If it is all highway I usually stop to full up around 230-250 miles depending on how aggressive I drive.
Everywhere else I fill up at around 200 miles.
Most of the time I usually fill up about 10 gallons each time.
I had my gauges checked but it seems like its a sensor problem within the tank itself.
