if someone could enlighten me on this topic. i was watching Best Motoring videos with the M3. in the video, it looked like it was an automatic. shifting for the driver. i just don't get this technology. and if its soo advance, why aren't other Manufactures implement this type of tranny?

$$$$
First they were in F1. Then they were in ferrari's. Now they are in BMW's. Tomorrow they will be in Acura's, etc. This is the way technology moves.

thanks Dan for the site
so basically, "SMG" lets you upshift, and downshift with a flick of a wrist? so then ppl with automatics have this feature. i know its not the same thing. one being mainly auto and the other manual.
you see, my boss got me wondering about this type of tranny. he has a 911 Turbo 6 sp. well, he would talk about how the SMG in the M3 is more superior.

I think the TT SMG is going to be the next big wave of things to come...

The twin clutch idea is fantastic and I have to hand it to Audi for actually bringing the tech to a mass produced model.
Junkster, who wonders when the Veyron will come out... wait, it never will at this pace

the manaul is a dying art, unfortunetly. With all the advancements of non-manual clutch systems coming into the mainstream, and more advancements on the way from F1 technology trickling down in the next 15 to 20 years, it wouldn't surprise me if the manual trannie is a very exclusive extra on cars.
Junkster, who would definitely miss all the footsy play of a manual

SMG is going away in F1 in 2008 so there's not going to be much trickle down. My boss has an SMG M3 and guess what - it's in auto mode most of the time just like an AT. Then when he wants to play a bit (like in the Alps) he changes the gears himself - like you do in SS mode on a TSX. There's very little functionality diff betwen an AT and SMG for the typical street car.
It's going to take several generations of drivers in Europe to eliminate the MT desire.

Actually, I believe this is a DSG, which is an improvement on the SMG, which can only go between adjacent gears.
The DSG can go directly to any gear, but upshifts are optimized for the next sequential gear (and it can upshift about as fast as you can blink your eye )

Audi TT doesn't use SMG, it uses DSG. Which uses 2 clutches... dual sequential gearbox.
Gears 1, 3, 5 are on one clutch and 2, 4, 6 are on the other. DSG works great if the next gear that you want has been correctly selected. Their is a slight delay when it's the wrong gear that you want... system has to shift other clutch to get proper gear.
Anyway, a TRUE SMG gearbox blows the doors off any "simulated" auto box... such at the sportshift, tiptronic, craptronic, etc.
But a pure sports car will always be MT.

Well yes, you have to remember that an SMG DMG whatever mechanically controlled manual transmission doesnt have a torque converter. The torque converter is what sucks power and is why a manual TSX is so much faster then an auto.
