How good are the oem filters from Honda?
Hello,
I am planing to do my own oil change, but not sure what kind of filter to get. I plan to use Mobil 1 5-30 synthetic.
I am down to three choices
Honda oil filters (5.50)
Mobile 1 synthetic filter (about 10-15 dollars)
Bosch oil filters (5.50)
If you know of better choices please let me know.
Regards,
Peter

Here's a little secret for ya: Honda doesn't make oil filters!
If they only charge $5.50 at the dealer then use theirs but I'm sure it's made by someone else. It probably is a rebranded Bosch.

They are made by Fram.
Fram is not the best filter, i have heard. One collapsed on a friends racing car.
But you have the best recourse if you have a warranty claim with OEM filters
so I am running OEM at least while in warranty.
I judge by the weight, more material better filter.
There are probably filter tests out on the net.

All car makers get their filters from some filter manufacturer - some are better than others. Bosch is usually pretty good. The problem with the lower end filters is the cheap way they are put together (which sometimes leads to above mentioned colapse) and the kind of filter paper used inside (which doesn't filter as well as more expensive ones). If you change your oil often enough this should not be an issue. The higher end Puralator ones are good.

The Honda filter is made by Fram, just to clear that up. Don't use the Bosch filter. Their fitment is "funny" on Hondas. The Mobil 1 filter isn't a bad one, but it doesn't have the fiber content of the Honda one. If you're just using it as a daily driver and you aren't a track guy like me, the Honda one is fine. If you're taking it to the track more than once every 2 months, get the Denso filter. It's a beast. Of course they collapsed the Honda filter when they took it to the track. It isn't intended for hard usage under heavy loads.

OEM filters are fram but not their high end stuff anymore. At one point honda had 3 oem filters, one made in Japen (the best one), one made in USA (next best), and the next best was the one made in Canada. This is no longer the case... so you are better off going with a Mobil 1 filter.

Thanks for everone's advice. I am going to stick with the oem filter until my warranty is up, then I will probably switch to Mobile 1 or some other top brand filter.
