There's 2 kinda machine wash. One is touchless (High-pressure washer/soap/wax) and the other one is regular machine wash w/ heavy duty brush. The first one is better than the later one. Careless car owner might scratch their paint. But if you know what you are doing, keep your tools (mints, microfiber towels, chamois, etc) wash and clean everytime, plus don't drop it on the floor, then it should be fine.

BTW: Did I said most car after machine wash is not purely clean??? In the summer, maybe. In the winter, with all the salt, sand, and dirt on the car, the machine can't make it clean even if you go thru twice.

An automatic car wash can do a lot more damage to your paints surface.

1) Use the proper tools and products (autopia-carecare.org, autogeek.net, jeffswerkstatt.com, zaino.com, etc)
2) Keep a few layers of sealant on the car (Jeff Werkstatt's Arylic Jett: Trigger works wonders!!)
3) Laugh at everyone going to automatic car washes

I love how they mention how much "time, effort, and labor" you save by going to the automatic car washes, but don't mention how much money you save by doing it yourself.

The only automatic car wash I can vouch for that actually touches your paint is Peterson's car wash. There are a few around my area in Virginia and I've been through once with the TSX and many times with previous cars. They use some type of synthetic cloth rather than brushes. When you're looking at it from inside the car it almost looks like strips of those Absorber synthetic chamois. I have a friend with a 2004 Mazda 6 with around 40k miles and he has never once hand-washed his car. It has only been through Peterson's car wash and his car does not have one single swirl mark on it. The quality of their wash is amazing but the price is not ($15). There is always an attendant there and they will re-wash your car over and over until you are happy with the results.
