Grinding in 2nd while clutch pedal is pressed in.

so today, i was at a stop, and i went forward in 1st gear, and then i was about to change to second gear, but it just went in halfway, and i didnt bother to put it fully in gear because i was coming to stop again (traffic), and so it the stick was halfway into 2nd gear (with no force being applied) with the clutch pedal being pressed in. after about 2 seconds of the stick being there, it grinded even though i had the clutch pedal pressed down fully.
by the way i only have 12,000 miles on this car.

how and why did it grind?

The clutch transfers power from the engine to the transmission, so that might not cause this problem. You might be losing your syncro for second gear. It isn't good to leave the shifter half way into gear because it will cause premature wear on the syncros. Is this issue repeating itself or was this a one time thing?

It's because your car was moving. The clutch disconnects the engine from the transmission but the counter shaft is always moving with the wheels. Just don't leave your car halfway in gear and it won't happen. It was just the stationary dogs of the second gear ring bouncing off the moving lands on the the counter shaft sprocket. It's not good for the transmission.

yea it was just a one time thing...it made the infamously awful grinding.
how bad was this on my tranny? would this be worse than just a regular grind?

all worried now, because i learned to drive stick on this car, and it has already endured a new learner and now this....

Just don't leave the car half way in gear. It should be ok, the transmission is pretty resilient.
