Fuel mileage: 1075km on a single tank

Before going racing in Sanair, I finished a gas tank today, which I pushed to the limit. I drove 1075km (672miles) on a single tank of about 71-72 litres (19USgals). I can't be definite on the exact amount of gas, though I know it couldn't be much less than that since I drove 210km (131mi) with the empty light on. I must have been on fumes, so I assume it was 72 litres. (For the newer members who'll say it's 65 litre tank, I know, and I fill up 72 litres because I also fill the expansion tank).

Well, this gives me an adequate mileage of 42.4 Canadian mpg, 35.4 US mpg.

I am finding this very intersting, because it is very close to last summer's record (see sig), even though it was in weather lower than 10°C, and most of the time with strong headwinds. Include one street drag race in this tank as well.

It is interesting, because it indicates that the engine is still becoming more and more economical as it ages. It now has 80,000km. I expect to be able, if it proves true, to travel 1150km on a single gas tank this summer, when the conditions are right. It would mean about 38USmpg or 45 CDA mpg. I also feel the engine more "willing" when I want to get all the power out of it. My race against the other TSX with 10,000km might be an indication of this.

If any of this means something for you guys, it's that your engines should keep becoming a little more performant as they age. Let's hope it's true.

I dont know what crazier, your mileage, or the fact that you can get 72 liters in your tank

So where exactly is the needle when you fill up? I had my needle on the line and thought I was running on fumes, but then was only able to pump in 53 litres. How much futher can that needle go? To the E? Past the E?

jlukja, it's mostly highway, 85%, I'd say. And I follow the speed limits, especially when gas is as high as now.

fdl, when I'm running on fumes like I did, the needle is past the empty line and has been so for over 100km. Believe it or not, I,ve never had any problems with filling the expansion tank like I do.

That's great! It's especially wonderful with the current gas price!!!

I have now about 5000 miles on my TSX with 5AT. With my mixed driving (about 50/50 city/highway) I am consistently getting over 27 mpg! This is with manual calculation, not by the trip computer (which tells me 28.8 mpg that is a bit over-optimistic...) This gas mileage is just getting better and better - when I first got the car it was 24 mpg at best. I am very pleased with it.

I can't wait to go on a long distance trip just to see how the mileage goes!

I am currently averaging between 25-26MPG in my 6MT TSX....still not what I want in terms of fuel efficiency, but hopefully it will get better.

The needle just stops at E as you keep driving. This week, (starting with a full tank) I drove about 20km past when the needle hit E and then topped off with 57L. So I figure there's 55L to E. I usually reset one of the trip meters when the light comes on and figure there's about 80-100km of range left.

Sauce has shown there's a lot more than that - nice job! You equalled the Transport Canada figure for AT (42mpg) and far exceeded the MT (38mpg).

to give a comparo point:

My best with 85/15 highway city split. Shifting at 3k RPMs with cruise control between 55-65MPH. Essentially grandpa driving.

25MPG

Worst: 19MPG if i drive it like the car is a sports coupe.

72 Litres? I was running below E earlier today and figured I'd be putting in 60L. Only 55.5L ( $50.00 )fit and thats even after squezzing as much as I could before the gas would'nt go down anymore. How you get in 72L is a mystery to me. I;ve never fit more than 57L.

I'm getting no less the 25MPG US with all city driving lately.

Whats the difference between US and CAD MPG?

I typically convert my kilometres to miles and then my Litres to gallons to figure out my US MPG. How do you calculate CAD MPG?

ClutchPerformer, I now am at about 80,000km / 50,000miles.

domn, the last 10 litres will fit in if you pump the gas in at the slowest speed possible.

To find US Mpg: 1 Gallon = 3.78 Litres. EX: 72 litres = 19 US gals. Then divide your mileage by the amount of US Gallons (3.78 Litres)

To find CDA Mpg: 1 Gallon = 4.54 Litres. EX: 72 litres = 15.9 CDA Gals. Then divide your mileage by the amount of CDA gallons (4.54 Litres)

I prefer the US MPG system, seems more realistic. Or if your going to use Canadian, why not use L/per 100 km instead?

sauce, I really have to try puttig in 72L. I can't see it happening though as I've had my tank overflow on my ever so slightly a few times.
