Follow maintenance minder or schedule?

I'm coming up on my first oil change. I have about 3,700 miles on my car, but my oil life is showing only 15%. I don't think I will make it to 5,000, which is when I usually change the oil in my cars.

Should I follow the oil life reading? Does the car actually analyze the quality of the oil, or is it an arbitrary figure based on mileage?

Any advice would be appreciated.
