First Oil change question
I am going to be changing my oil for the first time. The car has 4900 miles of mostly city driving. I am following the severe schedule. My question is should I also change the oil filter even though the manual only requires the oil change. Every time I have changed the oil in my prior cars, the filter is always changed.
What are most people doing on their first oil change. Are they also changing the filter?

Most people here are actually "normal". If the dealer told you that you are severe, they just want your extra money. So... look at the parameters for being normal or severe in your owners manual. If you fall under normal you are normal.
I always change the filter when i change the oil. Otherwise you are defeating the purpose of the oil change. However... these new K series engines are sometimes wierd like that. Maybe when Honda did their testing during severe conditions, everything was clean in the oil filter after 5000 miles so they just said to leave it on there.
IMHO though i would change it. It's only a few bucks... and you're under the car anyways... you'd might as well do it.

Driver/Detailer
Over in Australia, the manual states changing the oil every 6 months, 6000miles and the filter every 12 months, 12000miles. But the dealer I go to prefers to change the filter with every oil change. Costs an extra AU$11 (US$8.30) only, so why not?
Assuming you're using a semi or fully synthetic oil, 5000miles is not going to cause oil breakdown. The reason you're changing following the severe schedule is to remove the particles (both metal from the internals and silica from the intake) and any water (although this should evaporate when your engine warms up). The filter will contain the most particles, so you should change the filter.
It's like taking a nice shower after 6 months of travelling (and not being able to shower) to clean all the dirt off your body, and then you go and wear the same pair of shirt, jeans and undies that you've been wearing for that 6 months. You just get dirty and itchy again.
