Euro Accord with Diesel engine?

hey guys... Our forum @ acura-tl.com is down, so decided to come here and kill some time... well this is what I found while I was @ www.honda.co.uk.... they just introduced accord with diesel engine... cool huh?

It’s efficient – so it costs less
A combined figure of 52 mpg with performance that outstrips most
engines in its class.

It’s clean – so you’re taxed less
Beats stringent Euro IV requirements, so company car drivers avoid a
tax penalty of 3%.

It’s refined – so it’s less noisy
Class leading NVH (Noise and Vibration Harshness). The result? It’s
‘whisper’ quiet

It’s powerful – so it’s no less fun
140PS at 4,000 rpm, 0-60mph in 9.3 seconds, all with no dramatic
sacrifice to fuel economy.

more info @ http://www.honda.co.uk/diesel/

sorry if this is a repost

Kinda old news. Problem is, won't be seen in the US for awhile, not until US cleans up its diesal fuel to Euro standards..... Wish the acceleration was a bit better, 0-62 9.3 seconds isn't all that exciting. I'd give up 5 mpg for 2 seconds faster......

the only reason that diesel is popular in europe is because it's cheaper. diesel here is just as expensive as gas. plus it has a bad stigma here because of the past vehicles that ran with it smelled really bad (exhaust)...

It's not that much cheaper, and here diesel is about the cost of regular vs. having to put premium in the TSX.

The reason it's popular is that the diesesl literally have almost double the fuel economy, with 55-60 mpg not being unheard of. When fuel prices are double or so what we pay here, this becomes significant.

Also, Honda's offering is on the slower side. VW has a 150 hp TDI that will get you to 60 in about 8 seconds and top speeds in the 135 mph range. Moreover, it puts out 300 lb ft of torque, so you can do the 50-70 mph top gear pass without downshifting in about 7 seconds (probably faster than the TSX can do it in 5th gear). All while getting 50 mpg...

I don't quite believe the 50mpg statistic.

I think another reason that diesel (I should say turbo diesel) is popular is that most european countries tax (at least they did when I lived there, anybody?) cars based on engine displacement. So turbo diesel usually have lower displacement engines but impressive hp/torque numbers.

The taxing of the car depends on where you live but yes sometimes depends on displacement. Usually an NA car at the same displacement as a diesel car has higher HPs but much lower tq. The reason for popularity is milage and easy availability of diesel.
