Does Vtec really guzzle THAT much gas?
#43
I also noticed that my economy got slightly better over time. At the beginning it was around 25-26 mpg until around 8000 or 10000km, now it is usually around 29.
Do you think having 94 octane is better or worse for fuel economy than 91 or 92?
That last question is probably searchable.. just making conversation.
Back to the original topic, I usually came to the conclusion that my driving style doesn't make all that much difference. I seem to get about (700 +/- 30) km/tank (I really challenge that E) no matter what I do. Maybe it just averages out by then.

sauceman, who is just amazed at the mileage he has achieved yesterday in fall weather conditions: 350 miles with 9.53 US gals of gas: good for 36.7mpg.

How do you do it??

Yeah I'm serious...I want to know how you get such great mileage. I haven't seen mileage that good except in short spurts while cruising on the freeway. What do you do because I want to see how different your driving is from my own.

Although I can't realistically do it all, I try to do the best I can following these principles.

FYI, vtec is always on. The higher RPM lobes are designed with performance in mind. Your timing is constantly adjusting for optimal performance. The car was NOT designed around giving you maximum gas mileage.
If you want good gas mileage then drive accordingly, the TSX will let you do that... it will also let you burn gas like there is no tomorrow.

Exactly... buy that car then. You didn't buy a car that advertises both performance and great gas mileage, so deal.

90K...
hmmm. let's see.
I bought a S2000... didn't think gas mileage here just performance although is did ok in mpg.
I bought a Civic Hybrid... didn't think performance here but does pretty good off the line.
Put the remaining $42K in the bank.

Sounds like city drving in killing you not the VTEC. Besides the I VTEC is nothing like the previous VTEC motors..... not sure you are barking up the right tree. But I think your next car should be a Toyota Echo cuz gas aint going down anytime soon. Sounds like you need to take out another student loan!

The quick acceleration and then braking is drinking your fuel, not vtec. I did 3 WOT acceleration runs from 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears, and then drove on the highway, still got 33mpg to the tank. My car has only 500miles on the ODO.
