Did your car burn any oil when new?
As some of you might know, I had a rebuild from Acura at about 90,000km. New rings, valve seals, etc.
Anyhow, it is still burning oil, and the jury is out as to whether burning a bit of oil on a brand new engine is acceptable.
Please answer the poll with your experience with the TSX.
Thanks,
Eric

Be carefull!
Most people look at the level and thats it. Remember, if you do a lot of cold starts there is a good chance that there could be fuel in your oil which will make your oil level seem higher than it really is. I used to work at a dealership where a Corolla came in with an oil pressure light on but the oil level closer to the lower acceptable level. When you took a snif of the oil, it was smelled like fuel - maybe he had flooded it but I've also seen this pointed out in a Toyota owners manual.
Anyways, no oil buring from me.

My oil seems ok to me. Dealership oil change every 5000 miles. I dont drive my car too hard though. Maybe once in a while but that's it.
Also, when i first bought her and was breaking her in, i always let the RPMs vary. I also put in the occassional hard acceleration. Not sure if that made any difference.

At my last oil change, at 14,600 miles, I was about 1/3 quart low. That's within spec as far as I'm concerned. I do remember it burning more when the car was new. I changed my oil at 1000 miles, FWIW.
I really hope you don't have more issues, curls. I suspect you won't. How low was it when you checked?

Unless you had the work done by a pro engine-builder, a rebuilt will likely burn more oil than the factory-built motor did. I had a 4G63t Mitsubishi engine rebuilt, and it burned a quart every 1000 miles. Needless to say I would probably never go that route again.

Before my first oil change, I did not notice any oil burn... But I didn't really check my oil that often so i'll say that I maybe burned a little oil.. I did follow the slow break-in process by trying to keep it below 4000 rpms during the first 1000 miles... I changed my oil to full synthetic at my 10,000 service interval, and now I'm making it a habit to check my oil often.. I'm almost at 12,000 miles now and I do not notice any oil burn. The oil dip stick seems to be at the exact same level. But my gas mileage really stinks for some reason, but that's another story.

As above, 1 litre in less than 1000km. I plan to call my dealership this week to let them know that I will be fighting this all the way to Japanese HQ if I have to and will get a new engine if this burning doesn't stop.

As long as its all fixed in the end, I really don't care. ie: if this rebuild stops burning oil, or, I get a new engine. I am indifferent between the two at this point (although a new engine does sound better... hehehe)

Result from the dealer today: Have burned 1.25 L in under 1000km. Actually, 900km +/- 30km or so.
They drained and re-filled the oil, and I am to come back in 1000km or 1L, whichever is first. I've got money bet that I burn 1L before I hit 1K. LOL.
