Dealership for Oil change?

What do you people recommend to go for oil changes? A little too cold here in Chi-town to do it myself. The Dealership would probably have the recommended oil but would be more expensive right? Do you think its a good idea to go to jiffy lube? Not sure about the oil they use. Thanks!

I went to Jiffy Lube and everything seemed alright to me. I did go ahead and go for the full synthetic oil, even though it costs more, just to pamper my car. Oh and they went ahead and checked my coolant and filled that up, too. But for something like oil, just do it at some place cheap, IMO.

Have you actually reached the 10K change limit? If not, wait till the spring and do it yourself - sounds like you want to.

i go to mcgrath acura in morton grove and they charge 29.xx for an oil change and i think that's ok. every where else i know is about 21.xx and i think its worth the extra 8$ to know that is was dealer serviced, if anything comed up later i have documents that shows i serviced it with them. and the 10K service is a joke at 180 something $. the biggest thing is a tire rotation, i wouldn't do the service. and i heard many many horrible stories about jiffy lube or thoes other "quick oil change" stores.

Bring it to the dealer. If you have a Honda dealer that is closer to you than your Acura dealer, they will do it. Accord, Element, CR-V, etc has the K24 engine, so to the Honda dealer, a TSX would be no big deal.

Do yourself a favor and don't go to Jiffy Lube. I've heard too many horror stories.

Local Acura dealer charged me $29.99. I took it in for the trunk harness check so might as well have them do the oil change too.

The small price difference is not worth the risk...unless it's leased.

$29.99 is cheap insurance and keeps your records in good standing with Acura JUST in case. Plus, doesn't this include the Acura car wash if you are ok with such a thing.

My Acura dealer said to change my oil every 5000k. Is this normal? I live in Idaho where it gets down to about 30 in the winter and up to about 95 consistantly in the summer.

Yes, car wash was is included. I forgot to tell them not to wash it and was relieved to see no swirl marks when I picked it up. Also, you establish a good working relationship with the Acura service department which can lead to first dibs on a loaner.

This sounds completely normal, I change mine about this interval as well. Seems OK to me.

My sister always changed her OIL at Honda when her 2002 Accord was under warranty, after a while she got dibs on loaners for the day. She had everything from a Civic, to a newer 03 Accord, to a Pilot demo. They treated her nice. I hope to one day find that magic Acura dealer for my service needs.

In the past, when I bought used cars - it didn't matter to me where I got an oil change. Now, I get mailers freqently from my Acura dealer for $24.99 oil changes. However, I still pay $60 bucks for Mobil1 at the dealership every 6,000 miles. Overkill - yes, but when I resale the money will come back to me.

Honda uses speical BREAK IN OIL for their cars...after that I dont think you need to go to the dealer. But I do for the geniune Honda filter and Oil. I calculated it and to buy the Honda oil and filter it will cost slightly more to do it myself.(With full Honda stuff)

Also, synthetic oil I dont trust it!

Wow you're missing out, this stuff is fantastic. I didn't believe much about the hype but then in college a buddy of mine worked at Cummins Diesel. He wouldn't shut up about the synthetic oils.

Then I had a buddy use it in his Thunderbird turbo coupe, It had well over 100k mi on the stock turbo.

I fell for the hype, 5yrs and 62,000mi later my engine purs like new.

Plus the guy that went 1,000,000mi in his Accord credits the Synthetic oil to part of the feet. Synthetic is the bomb. But I don't use it on high mileage engines late in life do to it's aggressive detergents compared to normal oil.

But if you use it from early on, it's some good sh1t. My Accord gets the same MPG 5years later to within a 1/10th of a percent...that's damn good IMO.

I plan to use Synthetic in our TSX as well. But you only get the benefits if you keep the car for a long-long time.

Just out of curiosity, what do you consider a long time? I want to see if my purchase of synthetic oil was prudent or not.

Well I dont believe synthetic can prolong the life of your car. My old 91 accord went 11 years on normal oil, 5k intravals after break-in.

Studies I have read suggest 10yrs or 150k+ mi must be seen buy you else it is likely not an investment. I don't know how long I'll keep mine so I use it.

I have a beater truck that even gets semi-syn--it's cheap enough I figure.

I'm sure a Honda could last just as long without it, but synthetic has properties resistant to over heating too....I figure it's cheap insurance.

And exactly who is going to give you more money just cause you used Mobil 1 vs. regular oil? I'd venture to guess no one.

Do it for your satisfaction - not cause you'll recover the extra cost.

I don't know about you, but If I were in the market for a used TSX and found two in the same condition and same mileage...I would gladly pay a small premium for the one who had had used synthetic (with dealership records to prove it) over the one which had used conventional oil.

Guess, I won't know for sure until I resale - which won't be for a while. Probably won't use synthetic in our new CRV because I don't plan on keeping it for as long.

I used JiffyLube plenty of times on the Hondas and Acuras I own and never had a problem. The 3 Acura nearest dealer to me EACH charge $40+ for a REGULAR oil change. I pay $35 at JiffyLube for a regular oil change and it includes a vacumn of my floors and wash of exterior windows.

I'll admit that I've never used Jiffy Lube (or any of the other quick change shops from Mobil, Pennzoil, etc.), but I can't help but assume that at least 99% of the people that do use them are relatively satisfied or they wouldn't be in business. I change the oil myself, but if I didn't I'd most likely use one of these shops since there are no Honda or Acura dealers convenient to my location. Like any other service business, just shop around till you find one that has reasonable prices and does good work.
