Dealer put mud guards by mistake

My dealer called me and asked me to check if I have mud guards on my new TSX.
He says that a similar looking car in there dealership is missing mud guards so they wanted to check if my car has it.
I said I'll check and tell him.

I have mud guards.
I did not ask for it, neither paid for it.

What should be my next step?
Is it some kind of trick the dealer is playing?

Just be honest and tell the dealer. They might just say that it was their mistake and let you keep the mudguards.

Or they could be like the dealer that had my car orginally, and when they transferred it to the dealer I bought from, they put some on the rear, because it covered up a spot where the paint had been knocked off. Once I took them off to detail my car, I discovered it, and I was extremely pissed.

The dealer I bought from is taking back my car and having it fixed no charge. Plus, I think they had a few words with the other dealership.

Same thing happened to me only the dealer never realized it. I say once the sale has been finalized that's their problem. They are supposed to inspect the car before delivery and if they chose to give me free mud guards its not my fault! I certainly wouldn't give them back.

I heard most people get them for free (I did). I would ask if they really want them back.

I got them for free too + free trunk tray... Anyways, if its not intended as a freebie for you, just return it... But the dealer would lose some goodwill if they really wanted it back...

Thanks for your replies.

Just called the dealer and informed him that I have the mud guards.

He said "Well, you just earned free mud guards for your car".

congrats on your mudguards

just a warning about them, over time the mudguards will damage your paint

numerous owners have reported this problem, i used to have mudguards and took them off, even before i put on the OEM kit

I got my front mudguards for free, and took them off shortly afterwards because of the damage they cause to the paint. Plus i just dont like the look of them.

From what I have seen I am the only person in Toronto who feels this way

sweet deal

They're dirt cheap for the dealerships anyways...my dealership has mudguards on almost all their TSXes...
If you don't want them...just take them off and sell them.

How do mudguards damage the paint? Aren't they supposed to protect it???

They rub against the paint and scratch it underneath the mudguard.

I would think the mud guards and trunk tray's do not cost the dealer much. The dealer I bought from normally charges extra for them as part of a dealer add on package. I said no dealer package or no deal. They agreed to no dealer package. But when I picked up the car the mud guards and trunk tray were there. They said they automatically put them all all TSX's they sell.

I thought about that, but because I live in an area where the roads get salted I was worried rust would start forming there.

There were some pictures posted of the damage. It wears the paint right off, down to the sheet metal. And it doesnt take very long either.

Here is an article TOV had on the issue. http://www.vtec.net/articles/view-ar...icle_id=120197

From the other thread I thought scratching the paint would expose the metal and eventually lead to premature rust?

Smart dealer... He knows its best for him in the long run to just give it to you for free.

After reading all the complaints about Mud Guards, I called my dealer and told him that I'll return the mud guards to him.

Now, when I return mud guards I plan to exchange it with Trunk Tray.
Let's see what he says.

The right thing to do: Take you car back to the dealer and have them remove the mudflaps.

If they offer to give you something for your trouble of having to go back like oil changes etc, take it, if not ask for something in return for your time and gas.

Personally the car looks better without the mudflaps.

How long does everyone think it takes to develop the stratches from the mudflaps?

I've had my car about 5 months now...and 10,000 miles. I just got the OEM bodykit and I was gonna wait until after winter to put it on, but now I'm worried about whether or not I may have scratches after I remove them. It's been really rainy and muddy around here so my cars has been getting pretty dirty.

I am going to remove the mudflaps this weekend, but I was wondering if anyone has taken them off..and been lucky enough to now have those scratches.

Its difficult to be honest sometimes, but you did the right thing. When you think about it, the dealership was obviously going to give you the mud guards after you told him because they wouldn't want to give the other guys used mud guards...
