Dealer badges ON the car?

Hi everyone,

I've had this question bugging me for a long time. It might be slightly off topic but im wondering if some people can answer it. Here in California when you buy a car, the only place the dealer puts his dealers name is on a license plate frame, whether it's a Daewoo dealership or a Mercedes dealership. I know that in many other states, dealers tend to put a sticker or a badge ON the car itself. My question is...why do they do that? Is there a law in California that bans it? Do buyers in the east coast/midwest have no choice but to buy the car with the badge? Also, does the TSX in other states have it?

Seriously. So I'm thinking that maybe they don't do it on luxury cars. Do you have other cars in CO that have badges on them?

oh ok. So they would take it off. I still think that is stupid to put it in there on the first place. I wouldnt want to pay 15 Grand to a dealer so he can put his name on MY car.

Like budzzz says.....

The obvious reason for the badge is the free advertising that the dealership gets from it. It's quite annoying, as my dealership has a pretty steadfast badge. I'm sure there is a way to get it off, but not an easy way. It's pretty non-descript, and small, but annoying nonetheless. I took the cheapo dealership plate thingy off ASAP though. Let me know if you want to see my annoying dealer badge.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about that! Back in the 80s as a kid, I used to live in Chicago. I remember our car having a HUGE badge on it...bigger than the Chevy logo. As far as your free advertising point, you're probably right. Im thinking that California must have a ban on badging a car since I don't even see old cars with it.

Every time I buy a new car I tell them that for me to advertise for them will cost $2,000 a year. So far, no takers, and no free advertising.

I had forgetten to ask my dealership to take it off (cause I saw other cars in the showroom with them) so when I picked her up, it was right above where it says Acura. So I asked the guy to take it off he first mentioned I could use a heat gun and peel it off, but he had the detail people take it off for me before I took off.

The Porsche dealership where I live has a round silver sticker about 1.5-2 inches in diameter with their name on it and every Porsche there had one stuck right above the name of the vehicle straight dab in the middle of the rear!!! When I first noticed it:

Haha. I don't blame you for that. Its horrid to see an ugly sticker on your car, especially one that you didn't EVEN PAY FOR. I'm pretty glad that it isnt done here...just one less headache to deal with.

I told my dealer to not even think about putting their badge on my TSX. They usually do it, but won't if you ask them not to.

I have not paid much attention to badges but I have seen some on some low end cars.

I know, isn 't it so tacky to have the dealer's sticker on your car? I made a point to ask my dealer if they usually did that, because if they did, I wanted to make sure that it would not happen on MY CAR! Thankfully, he laughed and told me that they wouldn't do that anyway, so that was a big relief...

At the paperwork session, I told my sales rep to not put any dealer sticker on my car. I hate them things! Nothing like seeing some overpowering corprate logo sticker ruining the looks of the rear of a car. I've seen countless "prestige" brands on the roads with these stickers.

I let them get away with the license plate frame. No big deal. Very subtle.

Nice one, duugk.

My dealer put the license plate frame and front tag on, but I took those off. I told them not to put anything else on it, and I don't think they do anyway.

My mom never cared too much about her cars (Ford Taurus wagons, or similar), but when she got a brand new Toyota Avalon, she was out in the driveway with Goo Gone removing the dealer badge.

I told my dealer that here as well. I told them that they COULD put one on, but only if they pay an "advertising fee" of $100/mo.

My dealer had placed a small white sticker on the left side of the trunk during their prep. It was unobtrusive and tasteful, but I still asked to have it removed during the final detailing and they did so without complaint. My salesman agreed with me that it looked better without, said he had it removed from his own car too. Removal left no trace of adhesive residue and there is no sign it was ever there.

As I was saying in my earlier post, this is just disgusting:

I blurred out the dealership cause I don't think they'd pay me to advertise here for them...though they are our local Honda dealer too.

I had a dealer badge on mines, completing the transaction the day before the car didn't have the dealer badge on it, but they stuck one on and I didn't know until the next day I went to pick up my car. I told them to remove and they did. Those bastards!

There's nothing in the sales contract that says a dealer's badge must be placed on your car. So you have the right to deny having put one on OR (if it's on already) have it removed at their cost.

To me, whether it stays on or off also depends on how I was treated during the purchasing process. If I was treated fairly well, I wouldn't mind leaving it on. Also if it's hideous looking, it's off. If the badge is huge and really gets in the way when I'm waxing/polishing the car, it's off.

I only got a plate cover for my car and I've left it on.

Isee, thats interesting. In my opinion I would think its a wast of their time and money to be putting these badges on if the buyer is going to want it off anyways. Maybe this is why dealers in CA don't put badges on and just stick to the liscense plate frames instead.

It could be because Californian are more "image conscious?" That's why they don't have badges on their cars here in CA...

There are far worse things that dealer do to new cars, besides the license plates and badges, and I've seen them here in California. They are the wheel covers on SUVs..the dealers replace it with their own logo on that big black cover. If that's not gaudy, I don't know what is

Good point...although I tend to see it more on "non-luxury" SUV's

I've owened 5 new cars (Sentra, Integra, Maxima, Solara, TSX) and with each purchase I mentioned at the time of the sale that I wouldn't take delivery on a car with dealer badging. It was never a problem.

I have had dealer license plate covers on a couple of my cars, which I didn't mind as much. If I have a bad experience with a dealership, the plate covers come off.

I asked for them to remove mine before delivery as well. I am not sure a badge was ever put on since it was really late when I took delivery, even the "make ready" people had gone home. I also removed the license frame after my regular plates arrived. I do not want anything regarding the dealer affixed to my vehicle.

Most dealers around here (IL/Chicago) still do stickers.. One dealer has a non descript sticker they put on their cars that is just a big circle with an MW in the middle for Motor Works.

The most obnoxious stickers are the ones most used dealers put on.. very annoying. I bought my Trans Am i used to have from woodfield chevy, it had a woodfield chevy sticker on it but every letter was a seperate sticker so I made it just say wood for a long time

My favorite is when you see a plate from a dealer on a different type of car so you know they bought it used, like when you see bobs toyota plate frame/sticker on a honda etc.
