Cutting Springs?

hey guys, I'm fairly new to the forums but I just wanted to get your opinion on cutting springs on an 08 tsx. HAs anybody done this or have the link to a DIY? Or would I be better off just getting new coilovers?

springs have a set length
springs have a set rate.

what happens when you cut or heat them?
you lose the properties of the spring.

dont do it.
you'll be bouncing around every where.

Nuff said.

If you're looking to save money get a decent spring/strut combo.

i don't know how old OP is but i've noticed a lot of the civic crowd starting to pick up used tsx's.

whatever you do, just don't treat the tsx like a cheap civic... cutting springs shouldn't even have been brought up.

Why does everyone seem to think that spring rate changes as a result of changing of spring length?

But yes....cutting your springs is a bad idea...it's ghetto at best. Get springs atleast. Lowering springs are a cheap way to lower your car semi-properly.

Spring rates do increase when cutting a coil.

Cutting springs is a bad idea because with the length is designed based on the rate so that the car rides well...but won't bottom out. There are lots of other reasons as well...but we can explore this one since we're on the subject.

Why would the rate change magically? Cutting a spring that takes...say...300lb to compress 1" suddenly makes it a stiffer spring? Why? If it did, then nobody would buy lowering springs. Lowering springs are shorter springs with higher designed rates. If a spring kept stiffening as you cut it...well...then you can DIY lowering springs.

Heating springs might change the rate since you're changing the properties of the metal. But just cutting a spring isnt by itself making a spring stiffer.

No prob. I'll be more in depth next time...although I'm pretty sure OP is trolling.
