I don't trust them either, but since I don't have a driveway or yard or hosebib, I've searched for the best available drivethrough carwash out there. Get the thing carefully detailed and waxed. Some of these places are halfway decent, and I have found a place that will clean (indoors) with a handwash and hose, but it is $$$$$ - try to make sure I enter the winter season with a decent wax job on the buggy.
In the winter, I carry saturated cleaning pads to clean the headlamps, taillights, windshield and rv mirrors, and grin and bear it until there is a decent day, and then I get ten tons of salty crud blown off the car.

Go to those coin-ops at a gas station... bring your own supplies...
don't ever go on the drivethrough carwash with rails... The rims will get scrape very easily. It happened to me before....

We have touchless car washes here. It uses a combination of special detergents, hot water, certain water pressure and angle to clean the car. It doesn't do as good a job as the brushed car washes, but it also doesn't leave swirl marks or scracthes. I drive my car in and park it, the car wash uses a network of sensors to go around my car. For $6.00, it's well worth it in the winter IMHO.

I used to own a midnight black accord and I would run it through the local touchless wash all the time. The main problem I found was that I would still find a film of dirt on the car. The only true way to get a nice clean wash would be to wash it yourself. At least you'll have the piece of mind knowing that your washing mitt doesn't have the dirt of all the previous cars on it =)

In the winter I'll sometimes go to a touchless car wash to get the car reasonably clean. Then it's off to a hand wash and do it myself. You freeze your balls off, but when you see your nice clean baby the next day, wheels super clean and the tires shining...it's all good.

I go to the do it yourself car washes with the power washer. I just hose off the salt, that usually gets it pretty clean. I also own a thick pair of waterproof gloves for when I wash my car at home and its a little cold out .

I take it to a car wash and take medication for obsessive compulsive behavior.
