Canadian Top 10 Sellers for 04

Toronto, Ontario - The top-selling vehicle in Canada in the first two months of 2004 is the new Ford F-Series pickup truck, according to sales figures released by Desrosiers Automotive Consultants. Ford sold 9,138 F-Series pickups in January and February, 5.1% ahead of the same period last year. The top-selling passenger car is the new 2004 Mazda3 sedan/hatchback with sales of 5,386 vehicles.

The top ten best-selling passenger cars in calendar year 2004 are: the Mazda3 sedan/hatchback, Honda Civic sedan/coupe, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Echo, Pontiac Sunfire, Chevrolet Cavalier, Ford Focus, Honda Accord, Chevrolet Impala, and Chrysler Sebring.

The top ten light trucks are the Ford F-Series pickup, Dodge Caravan minivan, Dodge Ram pickup, GMC Sierra pickup, Chevrolet Silverado pickup, Pontiac Montana minivan, Chevrolet Venture minivan, Ford Escape SUV, Ford Explorer SUV, Ford Freestar minivan.

"It is interesting to see that passenger cars were down 14.7 percent to the end of february with every segment negative except sub compact which was up 23.0 percent," said company president, Dennis Desrosiers. "This is GM rolling out their small car strategy. I would appear that subcompact is drawing consumers away from the compact car segment. These newer subcompact models provide a lot of value added for consumers and in many respects offer the consumer as much as compact cars used to provide say five to eight years ago."

"It is the exact opposite with the light truck market where the large and luxury sport utes along with full size pickups are the only segments growing in a down market," he noted.

So does this mean that most folks make up for their gas guzzling truck/SUV/minivan with a subcompact?
I say get a mid-sized sedan and do away with both.

The Accord is the best selling mid-size sedan, before the Impala.

The best selling car in Canada was the Civic for a very long time. The Mazda3 has come out of nowhere to take over. Wake up Honda!

I think the Civic was Canada's best selling since 1998, but now it looks like its overthrown by the Mazda3, which isn't a shock to me. Canadians really like minivans.

Many families in NA have at least two cars, so having a large + small combo makes a lot of sense. The large vehicle for hauling stuff / kids / road trips, and a smaller fuel-efficient car for the spouse with the longer distance commute.

The new Mazda3 is pretty nice. Leagues better than the Protege. Trust me, I owned one for 3 years. I actually like the look of the new civic as well, there's a guy in my apartment complex that has a pretty nice new civic, I don't like the ghetto flava big ass chrome rims he has on it, but overall the new civic is a good looking car.
