AT break start... how bad is it?

When AT cars get tested for acceleration they always keep the foot on the brake, step on the gas, and then release the brake.

Just how bad is that for the car? So bad that you should never do it, that you should avoid it, or is it not too bad?

Uhm, don't they release the brake before flooring the gas?

very bad for the drivetrain and brakes, just marginably better than a neutral drop. there's no point doing it other than doing instrumented testing, a I4 N/A auto will always be slow.

It depends on how long you plan to keep the car and how long you do it for. If you're going to trade in the car in a few years and you're doing it a couple of times just to see what it's like it's OK. If you're going to keep the car for a long time I'd avoid it.

Isn't this also called a "break stand" because you're pretty much standing on the break until you decide to release it after pushing on the accelerator?

Some misinformation in this thread. 1. It does not tax your breaks at all to do an AT break start. A rapid stop from say, 40 MPH puts far more stress on the breaking system than a break start so dont worry about it 2. Relative to the transmission, it is no way comparable to a neutral drop. With a neutral drop you might end up with a trashed transmission, with a break start it is not much different from just flooring without holding the breaks. Think of the car magazines who have long term test cars. They do dozens break starts at the beginning and end of the tests (not to mention playing hard with the cars during the term of the tests) and at the end of the tests, usually around 40,000 miles, I have never read of transmission or break problems as a result of their testing.
