Replaced the starter with a no name reman off eBay. Car started fine but every few turns made a hacking sort of a sound. I decided to redo it and to replace the cheapy with a Bosch reman, thinking there was something wrong with the cheapo one. The SR1331X is what all the sites say should be a perfect match for a 2006 TSX.

But I decided to take a closer look and compared the Bosch gear to the original, and noticed that both the eBay cheapy and the Bosch one's gears end in a V sort of a shape. But my original Mitsuba doesn't have that V. See pictures.

Is this what could have been causing that periodic hacking noise during start? I now ordered yet a 3rd one and we'll see which shape it has.

Or.. am I barking up the wrong tree?

Replace it with a Denso that's an OE manufacturer and call it a day. it looks to be about the same price as the Bosch reman'd on rockauto after the core charge refund. (140.99)

I got tired of the chase and bit the bullet and bought the Mitsuba sm71005 from Amazon, $210 vs $400+ at dealers. No more guessing.

As an update, finally received the Honda (Mitsuba) starter and installed it today. Night and day difference. Quiet and no BS noises. Lesson learned.
