you could get the nav and the rims and the body kit off of a TSX, that is about $5K

Actaully my first choice, mid 90's Nissan Maxima SE, a '95 should be around there.

I was thinking Maxima/Accord but these Accord prices are INSANE ......... I mean you can get a new LX for 18 grand, why am I gonna spend 12 on something with 50,000 miles...... Also... you really can't go wrong with a Civic either

What I can't figure out is where all the cheap cars are going? Back in the early 90's there were a lot of shitboxes on the road and now pretty well everything is less than 8-10yrs old. They have to be somewhere!

I just sold a '96 Maxima for $4500. It had 135k miles, so one with lower miles should be right at the $5k mark. It was a very good car, dependable and didn't have any issues other than the door locks occassionally would lock on their own (gremlins).

Bet I could buy back my '95 for about $8Gs now. That would be sweet, but the missus won't let me.

Civic's good too, but no Miata... best gearbox ever made IMHO...

rb4580, your dreamcar awaits. A 1987 with only 13k miles.

Quote from the owner:
"It's clean, reliable and ready to drive or to keep as a collector's item."

You'd probably even have some leftover mulah for rims and system. Straight pimpin.

Check out this Baby!

best used car?...you mean sporting wise?...

88 honda crx hf (lightest 2g) with b16a1 engine, bolt ons, suspension ~$5k...you'll have a low 14 sec 1/4 mile fwd lightweight monster...~1700lbs and 200hp is awesome!

89 s13 silvia with sr20det redtop...some minor suspension work like struts/springs/bushings ~$5k...you'll have another mid-low 14 second rwd drifter that is a blast to drive

86 ae86 corolla (rare!)...with suspension setup and engine work it'll be a fun high low 15, high 14 second car for $5k

early 90s miatas actually hold their value well so finding one that you can do a FM miata turbo kit to fit under $5k will be difficult but not impossible

88 accord lxi 5spd !!!...cheap to buy and go to www.opmmotorsports.com and race prep it and it is a surprisingly fast car!...will fit under $5k easily and run low 15s

If that is the case, I would go for something like this:

http://www.cars.com/search/used/cc/s...rc=&cid=&row=4

84K miles is nothing for an Accord .... 150K+ is reasonable with some care.

Now that's something worth looking into.... that's a good deal and a great car!

if longevity and reliability then a honda is definitely a good investment...my friend bought a 86 teg rs for $300 at an auction and has some 200k miles on it...by 6 months of owing the car he will have paid for it and all its other costs (insurance, repair parts, etc.) by the gas money he saves (his other car is a suburban that requires PREMIUM fuel!!!...talk about $80-$100 at the pump

finding a good bmw 2002, old mr2, 535is or 944 for less than $5k in good driving order will be very difficult...but that's not to say those aren't good cars either

I have an '86 944 with 58k original miles and all the service records sitting in my garage. It has no problems. So it wasn't impossible to find one.

There's an '87 E28 535is with 116k for $3450 on the BMW board right now.

You might not find this stuff behind every tree but it's out there.

There's even a magazine dedicated to enthusiast cars on a shoestring, Grassroots Motorsports. http://www.grmotorsports.com/

For "longevity and reliability" as well as a great highway cruiser, go with the mid-90's Maxima. Best car I ever owned. Solid, strong, very easy to live with. Sold it to a friend with over 200K miles and the thing still runs perfectly. The VQ30 engine is a dream. Better than the K24 in my TSX and almost as fuel efficient. We all know the handling is better in the TSX but you can't buy one for under $5000, as the thread desires. Even though I love my TSX, part of me already misses the Maxima.

i understand that they are out there but for $5k in a good reliable running condition makes them harder to get that car and have it repaired into reliable running condition (especially bmws and porsches notorious for expensive maintenance and repairs)...i'm not knocking them as they are good cars but a nice little $1k honda with about $1k of preventative maintenance will last for a very long time...this is coming from personal experience of an 85 prelude w/ 275k and a crx hf with 306k miles with everything working including an excellent a/c before i dedicated it to racing

Oh, I certainly wouldn't disagree that an older Honda will be a lot more transportation VALUE for the buck. My '82 Honda lawnmower still starts on the first pull. However, since the thread started here, my recommendation *assumes* the car is a second car to a TSX which can't be even one year old. So it doesn't matter if my $5000 car doesn't always start, or if I have to wait to get some component from Pelican Parts so I'm not completely ripped by my smiling local Porsche-Audi dealer. I'm considering it from the perspective of FUN for the buck. My daughter drives a $500 car when she's home from college, even that one usually starts, so one need not invest the entire $5000 for basic and fairly reliable transportation.

i guess we both agree just stress things differently...anyway...where'd you get a honda power tractor...i just saw my first one at sears (v twin craftsmand for $1,800)...i also have a honda harmony lawnmower and it is the quiestest smoothest lawnmower i've ever used...mine is only 3 years old but my dad's scotts lawnmower of the same vintage already has a blown piston ring and is smoking like wildfire (but it still works)

It depends on what you want in a car. Do you want 2 doors, 4 doors, wagon, SUV, auto, stick-shift, leather, cloth, airbags, fun-to-drive, etc.

Before I bought the TSX I had been looking at either a 91-93 Nissan Sentra SE-R or an early 90's Honda Prelude 2.0si.

I think Honda just got out of the lawn tractor business last year. Mine has a liquid-cooled inline 2 cylinder motor. I bought it some years ago from the local purveyor of Honda motorcycles and ATVs, of course they were always clueless about the lawn equipment... It definitely cost more than $1800, and that was back in 1988. My 1982 Honda mower was actually bought used from a neighbor who was retiring and moving to a condo. They STILL make almost exactly the same mower, except it's now labeled "professional grade".
