Average Cost of Power Steering Rack Replacement?
I just took my 2004 TSX to the dealer after finding that all power steering fluid was gone. It turns out that I need a new power steering rack. The dealer is quoting $2,600 (includes alignment) which seems to be way more than what I've seen others in this forum pay. I called another dealer and they quoted $2,250 or $2,700 if I want new rods as well. Also, the second dealer told me they use remanufactured racks (unless I want new rods, in which case the whole rack is new).
The car has 97,000 miles and I plan on keeping it for maybe 2 more years (probably no more than 30k miles more).
I'm in Washington DC, where everything seems to be more expensive, but I don't know whether these quotes are way off.. .any advice?
ps: I'm also having the common center console lights out problem, for which I was quoted $450 to repair (replace the board) at the dealer.

$2600 is crazy. I paid like $1649 for including the alignment for a brand new oem rack. When I first called requesting price quotes it was between $1749-$1949. I found the part for $9XX and the dealership agreed to match the price on the part. I posted on here about that experience so if you search for the post, you can find out more info their.

Since this is a common issue and is safety related, I would also file a report with the NHTSB although I wouldn't expect much.
Also call Honda customer relations and reference the TSB. They may pay for something as a goodwill since it is a known issue.
I certainly wouldn't have bought me Honda/Acura to have my PS rack go under 100k miles.
