Is it Ok to do complete drain for AT transmission fluid ? According to my dealer Honda do not recommend full drain only about 3 bottles. But the question is if you change only 3 litters what about the rest?

About 3 qt of oil comes out and the rest stays in the torque converter. Thats why you do a flush to get rid of the old oil. You would drain the atf. put new atf in. drive for a few miles. Then drain and fill again. You do this about 3 times.

Hi,
I'm getting ready to change my transmission fluid.
I'll try the method of removing the driver's wheel and partially removing the cover.
To loosen up the undercarriage cover how many clips do I need to remove plus is there one bolt that needs removing? Also to loosen the clips do you just pry it out with a screwdriver?
I searched but didn't find any pictures in other threads.
Thanks for the help!

How come the MT doesn't have a dispstick?

I bought my car (2004 5AT) with 84,000 miles on it. I have since passed 95k, so it was time to change the trans fluid. Since I haven't been able to find any pix, here are a few:
I found it helpful to leave the trans dipstick in (the one with the yellow handle) until after I had removed the drain plug. Once I pulled the stick, the fluid just gushed out. Also a definite must to replace the washer. My dealer gave it to me with the 3 quarts of fluid, so ask for the infamous "good will gesture" and hopefully get the hookup.

Thanks, Bergman. I'm about to change the Trans fluids in gf's 06 TSX. It has about 33k. A friend who works at Honda Corp recommends we do it every 20k. He says it's cheap insurance for him since he has all the tools and employee discounts. So I should have gotten it done about 6 months ago but never got to do it. Since I'm changing the front pads as well. I'll just try to do everything in one shot.
Back to the topic...do I just ratchet that squareish drain bolt? Or I need some sort of special socket? How did everything go when you did your flush? Anything tricky? Any tips about not making a mess? lol

These are probably for the manual tranny. I don't have the part number off hand but the washer for the auto tranny drain plug is a 18MM.

Yes it is a PITA since Honda reversed their engines. On our 6th Gen Accord I don't have to remove anything to drain it. Now on my sister's Accord I have to remove the entire splash pan to get to it and if it wasn't hard enough now Honda has changed from plastic screws which you could unscrew easily to these push button plastics clips which are prone to breaking.

hey guys, quick (and perhaps stupid) question: I was informed that some hondas, when changing the transmission fluid have a filter that needs to be changed as well. Is this true?

Update, I changed the fluid 3x with the Honda ATF fluid. Removing the drain plug and refilling was easy. The two parts I find easy, but annoying as hell was removing the splash guard underneath the car, putting it back on, and jacking the car up and down three times. I used only 1 new tranny drain plug washer.
If you were to ask me if I were to do it again ... probably not.
The fluid was $7.99 a bottle x 9 = $72 before tax. There are some "specialize" honda repair shops that will do the entire flush for about $120 with oem honda ATF fluid, not a bad deal.
