in the 24th and a half...
The "Buy Back" deal is no deal.
The rules are (going from a letter I got a couple of months ago that had a formula in it):
1) They look up "blue book" value . Note, the dealer uses the black book whose prices are lower than the blue book prices online .
2) They then reduce the offer by something like $.10 a mile over the "allowed" amount (generally between 10000 and 12000 per year). (i.e. 30000 miles with 24000 allowed means a $600 reduction)
3) Reduction for wear and tear.
4) Reduction for missing maint. records.
5) Reduction for costs related to preparing the vehicle for resale.
6) Pro-rated reduction for tire life.
etc...

I think it's all about allocation. Acura gives dealers cars based on what the dealer sells. If you sell a lot of 09 TSX's right away, you get more of them.
My Acura dealer did a lot of buy back programs for 2 reasons.
The first was obviously to sell you a new car. In many situations it worked out very well for the consumer. Anyone who leased an 04 or 05 TL or TSX was involved in a pretty crappy lease program. You send them a buy back letter and they call in, you let them know they can get out of their current lease and into the 07/08 cars and LOWER their payment and it's a great deal for them (the leases on the 07's and 08's were roughly $100-$150 per month less than they were in 04/05).
The second reason is we would rather pay good money to our own customers for their cars (that were typically serviced with us) than pay the same money for a similar car (with no record of service) at the auction. It's easier to sell a car with a personal history than to say "we picked it up at an auction."

There's pros and cons in everything but I'm insulted by the notion that demand for my used car is particularily higher now than it was yesterday or will be tomorrow. Of course that's false and therefore they can't and won't give me a better deal than if I had strolled onto their lot of my own accord.

Scam Central. I still get these letters for cars i don't own anymore!
I got one recently for my wife's lexus. They said to come in and have us appraise her car and they will give me a free tank of gas for my time. I went into the dealer, the salesman told me they send out 20,000 of these letters. He asked me if i was interested in a new car or just here for the gas. I told him I just wanted the gas. 15 gallons of new fuel later i went home. Thanks for the gas Lexus!
Of course the dealer wants to buy back your TSX. The TSX has one of the best residual values in the market. They will always want to buy your TSX back, every day, any time! You have a great car that hold its value unlike any other car you will ever own.

Make a hole, coming thru!
I got such a letter early last year from the local AMC/Dodge dealer after I had a fuel tank replaced on my 1987 Jeep there. I really didn't even bother going in to see what they'd offer for my 20 year old Jeep ... I didn't want a new one. Maybe I shoulda. I could've gotten an "appraisal."

I saw an '04 non-navi MT TSX at the Honda place with 48,xxx miles on it, the sticker
read $23,445!!
wow.
She asked if they'd sell it for $20,000 cash on the spot, the guy said no way.
"We can do a little, but we can't lose money."
The '04 TL's on the Acura lot, with the same miles, were about $3000-$4000 less.

Maybe they had to put in a new a/c compressor, audio head unit, re-line the doors, replace headlight clusters, and replace the driver's seat track to make it saleable.

I don't know, but my jaw about hit the pavement. I actually coughed/spit almost
when I saw the sticker. She even asked him to go check because it couldn't be
correct, so he pulled his little piece of paper out and showed us, and it matched.
I'm gonna go grab her notes, *grabbing notes* ...
yup,
TSX
2004 - 23,445 - 47,918 - [big NO written here]
2005 - 21,995 - 44,934 - NC (whatever that is)
2006 - 23,488 - 15,283 - C
yeah, somebody in the pricing department was way off.
but these other two she has here seem closer.
she has this one circled:
TL
2004 - 21,488 - 46,645 - C

I got the same thing for my Acura EL, and they'd give me some "deal" on an 09 TSX as well. Really weird.
