If it's universal, would it not already have a chip in there that is programmable?

Who knows. Maybe the Accords in Europe don't use the transponder chip.

Don't know if any of you have taken a look at programming a new key to work in the car, but SERIOUS PIA.

It won't work for our cars. You have to have the key cut at a Honda/Acura dealer. The key cutters used for Hondas are not laser driven as the ones for MBs and Audis are. You actually have to order replacement keys in from Germany. They aren't on demand as our keys are. The immobilizer chips are also of a different design in European makes, which makes the programming process different than our cars (or nearly impossible). In other words, you can buy the key for fun, just don't expect to get it to work in your Honda.

Kurt, since it lists Hondas, I am going out on a limb and saying that if the EU Hondas have Immobilizers (and I don't know that they do) then the same chip is used in the Hondas.

If a different chip is used, I still have an idea... do they sell an aftermarket immobilizer that works off of this key? If they do, and you can get one, you can get one of those to trigger a remote start immobilizer bypass, still retain the same level of security as a remote start installation, and make it work.

Actually the keys for the 04+ Civic (and probably the Accord) are all laser cut.....

but I think I would be more concerned with the radio frequency... probably different due to FCC standards....

As far as the immobilizer chip goes, I think it probably has one built in since it claims to support all those different cars....

a side question, what kinda 'chip' do they use for the newer keys? I know the older 'chip' is simply a resistor with a certain specific resistance

ACtually, Jeff, if you're going to do a EuroR conversion, you might as well go with the smart acess system conversion......

The new Honda Accords already come with an integrated key fob right? I wonder why they don't do that for future models of the Tsx....

Werd...

However, Acura's system on the RL takes the cake (and probably any Smart Access system). It's so cool to simply walk up to the car and just open the door, and turn the starter knob. What's even better is walking away from the car and not having to do anything...you want to go make sure it locked, but if you get too close again, it unlocks

You can choose the type of Key comes out of the switchblade. It is the A8 (Honda/Acura key) from Rhino. It is a complete replacement to the stock security system for 75 Euro you get 2 controlers and all the hardware (brain, wire harness, sensors and horn). I think its a good deal.

Well, here's a stupid idea I just came up with.

What if you could make a rectangular enclosure (such as the one above) and have our TSX key fitted with some clever mechanism that will allow the key to pop in-n-out. This should take care of the immobilizer.

Getting the transponder function should be a piece of cake then, right?

well...................... Lets leave it to the Germans. Actually i believe the transponder chip is inside the Acura part of the key. Its gonna have to be one huge retagular enclosure. And also dont forget about the remote functions.

I referred to the remote lock/unlock/trunk/alarm functions of the key-fob as the transponder...since that is what these signals do.

My assumption is that as long as the car can detect the key (not key-fob), then the immobilizer will be disabled.

Anyway, if the key can rotate out (e.g., MB key fobs) then the enclosure would not need to be much larger than the dimensions of the key.

I know the crappy Acura key-fob issue has been debated ad nauseum in this forum, but I just can't stand seeing my scratched up keyfob.

Is it true there's a chip on the key? I was told I couldn't make copies of the key. I can only order a new replacement through acura. If I use a copied key without the chip, the car won't start. Is that true????

That is correct. Someone told me they tried to start a friend's Odyssey with a cut key (as a joke....they'd move her van in the parking lot so she'd be confused as hell when she got off of work), and the key actually wouldn't come back out of the ignition. (the jamming part is unconfirmed, as he has lots of "stories", but the not starting part is definitely for sure)

I don't think those keys are that cool.....not if we have to pay extra for it.....

People always thought we would get keys like the Benz and BMW, the laser ones, rather than a key itself.....since TSX is consider a NEW gen of car.....

but I don't understand why Honda accords would get a key and key fob in one but none of the acuras do????? what's missing?

I'm really about to write to honda and find out why? It just doesn't make any sense why their lower model cars would get the nicer key.

that's still kind of dumb and ironic that the TSX is a Euro Accord but we don't have European "VW, Audi, and Mercedes" type fobs, but that they have fobs on the US Accords.

Ahhhh. I miss my old VW key fob. It was great. Switchblade design is awesome. I wish they did a better job with the paint on the buttons. After about two years, it wears off, but I believe Audi has already fixed that.

Thumbs down VW/Audi style key fob is not so great...

OK, maybe it looks cool, but I just switched from a Passat to a TSX and I like the TSX key + separate fob a lot better than the thick "switchblade" VW/Audi design. And.. after 6 years the VW battery section started to separate from the part that holds the key. I had to Scotch tape the thing back together.

Cool isn't always fuctional.
