70K miles - call it quits on modding or continue on?

sup gang,

i am torn with what to do. i have the audio bug again and have come to the realization that the only way to TRULY achieve the sound quality i desire would be to eliminate the stock HU from the equation. so what I am thinking of doing is a custom screen mod that will go where my current radio controls are. this would give me Navigation, DVD player, blue tooth, SAT radio, IPOD, and also the ability to totally tune the sound of my system to achieve the best sound possible.

the reason that i am torn is that doing this job will cost a hefty chunk of cash and i'm not sure whether it makes sense to take my car to the next level at this stage of the game already having 70K miles on it.

thoughts?

jay

I don't think the miles are a concern, but how many years you still intend to own it. The car will last for as long as you want to own it. That's a lot of $ if you think you may get the bug to replace it. Do you think you'll be tempted by the 09 redesign?

Jay, I would see what the 09 looks like and do a trade. That might be a smarter move, financially.

Have you been over to A/V lately? The stock HU is a quality unit driving a 4 channel balanced differential signal. It is very clean and can reach all the way to the trunk (or much further) interference free. There is no need to remove the HU from the equation at all! If you want quality sound, all you have to do is replace the stock speakers and provide them with a half decent amp to power them.

Your stock amp is pushing a whopping 12w rms to 6 paper speakers and 2 horrible tweeters. Why blame the HU for the output of these components?

For more info, please take this discussion to A/V. Do a search, or look through some of the recently added FAQs (such as the "Proper way to bypass the TSX amp" thread), or anything by mercman, castles_saloon, Saltyone (recently did a nice install), myself, or any of the others there now.

A lot of our "old" information on the TSX HU has been debunked, thanks to the work of some talented EEs over there now. Did you know there are now iPod kits that display song / artist text on both navi and non-navi HUs? Did you know someone has written a program to capture touchscreen data from our navi systems? Its still a very early stage project, but there's a lot going on over there, and I feel that many of our users here miss out on that section.

So please jigga (and others) hit up A/V if you haven't recently. Search and view recent threads and see what goodness we've got waiting for you.

Definately don't do it if you have a chance to buy an '09 and you think you'll take it. I can see you in late '08 going damn that new TSX looks killer but I plopped way more into this old TSX then I'll ever see back out of it. I assume this is the position you are in.

In the unlikely event that you can't possibly get an '09+ within the next three years, or plan to keep the TSX that long, then it would barely be worth it.

Generaly speaking, if you're going to drop that kind of coin you want maximum usage and you're looking at less than half usage since you're probably past the half way point with the car.

Your car is very reliable. There is only one question that needs to be answered:

Are you going to keep your car for a long time?

If you are, and you're an audiophile...then go ahead. You'll be able to enjoy your audio for the next few years. Mileage shouldn't be a factor, unless you don't tend to keep your cars when they get to high mileage territory.

thanks for the advice everyone. the voice of reason has pursuaded me to hold off for now. i just cannot justify this type of modification for the simple fact that i may only have my tsx for a couple more years and there is no way that i will get that money back when i sell it.

if anything i may just try out some different component speakers other than the MB quart i have which are too harsh for my taste. i may also purcahse some of those new Alipine amps that are very compact and take up less space AND an IPOD adapter and call it a day.
