2008 TSX *does* play mp3's!!!
I was under the assumption (from what I've read here at Acurazine) that my 2008 TSX wouldn't play MP3's. I was considering installing a DiCE unit eventually, but decided to throw one of my MP3 CD's in there, and whaddya know, it plays it!!
I have my albums in separate folders on the disc, and it only played the mp3's in the first folder though..I couldn't figure out how to go to the next folder. I also didn't see any tags displayed on the display. It's pretty ghetto (you'd think a car like this would do a better job at handling mp3's out of the box), but whatever, it's better than my ripping the dash apart to install the dice unit.
I've got a 6spd non-navi, for what it's worth...

I probably used Nero (I burned this months, maybe over a year ago for the mp3 deck in my Civic). It's on an 80min "Staples" brand CD-R. Not sure which of my burners I used to make it..
I'm going to make another disc with all my mp3's in the root folder (since I can't figure out how to change folders on the stock headunit), give me a bit to figure out what to put on it. I'll report back with my results..

Make sure you go past track #20 or something very late like that. I hope this pans out good. I'm picking up my baby in just a few short weeks and this was pretty major for me.

I just tried burning another disc, it did NOT work in the TSX. Here's what was on the non-working disc:
-72 mp3's
-708mb (overburned a 700mb disc)
-burned with Nero 8.1.1.0
-TDK 700mb 48x disc, burned at 32x
-burner: Pioneer DVR-111D DVD-RW
I have no idea why the first one worked...I burned it a LONG time ago for the deck I installed in my Civic, so I don't remember the settings I used nor the burner. I don't feel like wasting any more CD-R's, so I'll try a CD-RW with fewer mp3's or something to see if there's a "track limit" or something.

Sucks that even Civics get MP3 playability. I was amazed at the Navi/Audio system on my friend's 06 Civic SI. It has alot of stuff that we don't have..we sure got dicked on that

Burning Brakes
if you wanted to really test the thing if it works, burn a disc..and don't over burn it this time, with only 20 songs. Put 10 of them in the Root, and put 10 of them in a folder. use a CD-R only. If that doesn't work, try using other codecs to encode it.

Don't overburn.
Don't burn at max speed. (Ten years ago I had problems playing CD-Rs which were burned at 24x, but no problem with ones burned at 8x or 4x, on my Toshiba dvd player.)
Put them all in root directory, and throw an .M3U playlist file for shits and giggles.
NOW tell us the results.

My TSX played mp3s, I downloaded a cd from a website and burnt it with windows media player. The files are in mp3 format, differing bit rates since I think the download was the retail cd.
I have an 08 AT

^^^^ if you burnt it with windows media player, then you burned a music cd. Which means it converted the mp3's into cd music files. Windows Media Player does not allow you to burn a data cd full of mp3's. Unless there is a feature i do not know about.
I do not understand why is it so hard for people to comprehend the meaning of of a cd player that can play mp3's!!!!
If you have a data cd, with mp3's on it, and it plays on your 08 tsx. Then let us know. This is a waste of a thread

i think people who think their cars can play mp3's because the songs they download are .mp3. i'm not sure, correct me if i'm wrong guys, playing an mp3 disc is playing a cd with more then 30 something songs on a disc and burning the disc as an mp3 disc. you can have .mp3 files on a cd with like 20 songs and the cd player will play it.

haha ok guys, I'm a computer engineer & a computer scientist...honestly, I'm not stupid enough to burn an audio cd with mp3's and think it's a mp3 data cd.
I got all excited because I got that one disc working (well one folder on it), but I can't figure out how to get a new one working. I'm not going to waste too much time on this (right now anyway). If anyone in the Central NJ area wants to meet up and check it out, I'm game.

I had the RF mp3 deck in my old car and there were disks that it would not play. Also, it does matter what settings you use when you encode the cd's. There were certain sample rates that the deck would just not play. 22.050k was one, and it didnt like one of the variable bitrate codecs either.
Another interesting bit of info... my old sony cd/dvd player could play mp3 cd's. I created a data cd and burned mp3 files to it. No overburning, used a cdr not rw... It would not play. Out of curiosity, I used the mp3 disk feature in Nero, put the disk in the player and it worked. There were 151 mp3's on that cd, so I know it didnt decompress the mp3's and burn an audio cd. Perhaps on the very most basic settings this will work!
Was the successful play done at 44.1k, 128 or 160 fixed bit rate stereo?

let's stop calling them "MP3-formatted CD" and what they are => CD-R

If no one has bandwidth, I have scads on my domain, and can post and release it to specific people via PM.

I agree and ISO image would be ideal. It's remotely possible the stereo has some crude support for mp3 that's undocumented due to it sucking realy bad; highly unlikely but not impossible.

I don't mind making an ISO of it. It's some of my old stuff, haven't had a chance to take a look at it (my other car was just stolen yesterday, argh), but let me know where to upload it and I will when I get a chance.

I completely zoned out on the issue of songs.
CiViCKiDD, because they are copyrighted material, I would suggest only making the ISO available to those (few) with a 2008 model who want to try out the disc. (I'll try on my 2006, but with no expectation of success.) On reflection, it would be better if you burned a disc with freely available music (not BitTorrent, but actually free downloads from musicians), test it in your car, and then make the ISO if it works. This might take a little research and effort on your part, but helpful for others if it turns out that some 2008 models have an updated audio head unit and others don't.

Determining the head unit's version info?

I found the diagnostics and developer menus on my Navi screen and they each have Version pages, but I can't tell if those version numbers are only for the Navi or if one represents the firmware revision of the head unit.
The reason I ask is beyond discovering a way to get MP3 support via the head unit, I'm trying to get iPod integration with the Dice kit, and the first unit I've received will almost work in CD Changer mode, but I can't get the XM/Sat mode to work at all (and yes, I've disconnected the XM receiver in the trunk and set the appropriate switches.) They're sending me a replacement unit, to see if that resolves the issues, but it might be helpful to know the exact version of the head unit (without disassembling the dash.)

This is ridiculous. I don't believe anybody has seen confirmed proof that MP3 discs play in the TSX. If the 08 truly does support MP3s, it wouldn't be this difficult to even get confirmation that ONE person had it working. Also, why would Acura change the functionality of the head-unit mid-model year, especially with a major change in body style approaching? It makes no sense, and I am extremely skeptical.
Get the Dice unit and an old beat up iPod. It works great and you can get everything for quite a bit less than $300.
