Honda recalling 165,000 vehicles over engine problems

Associated Press
Mar. 19, 2007 09:30 AM
WASHINGTON - Honda Motor Corp. said Monday that it was recalling about 165,000 vehicles from the 2005-06 model years in the United States to deal with potential engine problems.

Honda said the recall affected 2005 models of the Acura RL, TL and TSX sedans, 2005 Honda Accord coupes, sedans and hybrids, 2005 Odyssey minivans and 2006 Ridgeline trucks.

The move is part of a global recall because of similar problems, said Honda spokesman Chris Martin. Details on the total number of vehicles and the number of countries where the vehicles were sold were not immediately available, he said.

Martin said the automaker discovered that sealer material leaked onto a coil wire inside the fuel pump relay on some of the vehicles. The wire can become brittle and snap, causing the engine to stall or fail to start.

Honda has received "multiple complaints" of vehicles stalling or failing to start, Martin said. There have been no injuries or crashes linked to the defect.

Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pump relay free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in early April.

Owners can contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009.

Interesting. Wish they'd do one for the headunit though on the '04s. I've been lucky with that so far, but watch me get unlucky right after the warranty is up.

I think you have to call that toll free number and that's how you'll find out.

I just called them. You will know if you are affected when you receive notice. I tried to get her to give me the VIN range, she couldn't for some reason.

She said I was affected.

The fuel pump relay failed on my 05 TSX a few months back while driving down the highway. It was not fun to be driving at 70mph and having your engine cut out on you, so this one everyone may want to get this fixed asap.

If your engine cuts out while driving, make sure you pull over somewhere safe as quickly as you can -- my steering locked up about 20 seconds after losing power.

I would imagine this is covered by the powertrain warranty.

I posted thi on the RL recall thread, but here some info for you tsx'ers. They used 2 types of relays, denso and mitsuba.

The denso relays are fine.

The mitsuba relays need to be replaced. If you have a mitsuba relay, your VIN will be on their list.

Where did you get these info? My friend has a 2005 TSX but since he did not his VIN # ready, they could't give him the info.

So it's only for 2005 right? I bought a 2006....whew.

Those that are affected, do your cars just stall or not start at all? Is it just like whizzing sound and the engine doesn't turn over?

you're more likely to introduce problems by having the dealership doing unnecessary work

Sometimes dealers screw up more than they fix. I took my '05 TitsSX in a few months ago to have the passenger side seat heater switch replaced. They "replaced" the passenger side one and the next day I was driving at night and noticed that the drivers side switch backlight wasn't working. I think they just switched it and hoped I wouldn't notice. Bastards!

hmm mine falls into this range. I guess ill have them do the work when I take it in for maintainence anyway. I've never had my car stall or completely not start but lately it will act like its not going to turn over once in awhile.

04 here.. thank god, but just wondering, 04 hs 200 HP, 05 and 06 has 205 HP, does this have anything to do with them tweaking the engine to pump out 5 more hp?

Same here, but a couple times lately my car needed a 2nd crank or a "longer" crank... I'm going to ask when I take my car in for an old change anyways.

new to this site but i like what i'm seeing in terms of knowledge . i have a 2006 but i get the same thing (longer crank) . is it because of the winter and cold days?

I think it's the colder weather as well. My '04 takes a couple extra seconds to start when it's real cold out. I had the battery checked and the dealer said it's fine.

Longer cranks seems normal in this I4. I have the same problem in my old 03 Accord with the same engine. Most likely it's the crappy OEM battery.

Interesting no one has asked where the relay is located! If easily accessible, one can check which name brand is installed.

Just last week my car would not start and just kept cranking over and over. Finally it started.

I just brought my car in for service too (and like the other person said, my seat-heater switch no longer lights up) and had the center console fixed.

I just called and luckily my VIN is not within the affected range. Although, they did tell me that there has been another recall on 05's (and possible other years) regarding the HID headlight assembly. Apparently where the hood contacts the headlight housing it causes some rubbing that will deteriorate the seal over time allowing moisture to enter the headlight. They said that the HID notices were sent out on March 9th.

I've already had one headlight replaced under warranty due to moisture about a year ago so it looks like Acura is finally addressing the problem. Hopefully some of you guys that are out of warranty could benefit from this new recall.

Yeah, the headlight condensation is definitely a widespread issue, so it's good they are doing a recall. I had one replaced already too. Wonder if I'll get a notice.
