2004 vs. 2005 reliability

Interesting curiousity, JD Powers has the 2004 TSX being a better build quality (e.g. fewer problems) than the 2005. Here's a couple of links:

2004:

2005:
http://research.cars.com/go/crp/safe...ff=forbesautos

Bit disappointed that the mechanical quality isn't rated 5 stars.

This year I've seen 300% more TSX on the street than I did last year. Reason is, the TSX is getting very popular! More people owning TSX = greater chance that people will encounter problems.

I'm pretty sure JD works on some kind of scale. Statistical math just wouldn't make sense if they tested a car that sells thousands of models against a car that sells dozens. They use something called the customer satisfation index and take a percentage of the results to come up with their ratings.

I still don't know why the ratings would change, its the exact same car as far as build quality is concerned...

JD Powers "results" are meaningless IMO. They are basically a "for hire" survery company. If you have the cash, they'll get the results you want.

They claim to be based on survey results of consumers.

If they were based on companies paying them for a good result, then why don't companies that get bad reports pay more and get good results...you know they could afford it. Ex: Audi has a couple bad reviews, why didin't they pay to prevent that?

I don't always agree with the whole "they paid for that good report" theory because if that were the case every company would be doing it...

but who knows...you could be right

It's kind of funny since my 04 had a ton of glitches that my 05 doesn't have...

Shifting seat
Grinding rails
Speaker rattles
Defective CD player (twice)
Squeeky driver's seat springs
Engine buzz in radio
Recal with something in the trunk (don't remember)

The 05 has nothing of those so far...

Ummm, to say that a 2004 had a recall that the 2005 didn't is a bit short sighted, don't you think?

On the other hand, Ford continued to sell cars and trucks with a defective cruise controller switch that caused fires for years; and tires that blew up in hot weather; and Mustangs that blew up when hit from behind; and Explorers that crumpled when they rolled over, ...

Sheesh! Glad I own an Acura.

that's why I said so far... I would expect a recall at one point...

If you look at the legend, the number of stars (or bubbles) corresponds to "among the best", "better than most", etc., in other words, the rating is relative to other vehicles. I'm not saying that's what happened, but it's certainly conceivable that even if between 04 and 05, the TSX remained 100% the same and TSX owners rated them 100% the same, the rating could still change if competitive cars improved from 04 to 05.

So, even though the TSX stayed the same from '04 to '05, the rest of the automotive world improved?!!

BTW, I wasn't trying to give us "original adopters" something to crow about, I was actually trying to show a friend just how outstanding the TSX was (which is why I bought it rather than a more muscular car like the G35 etc.) in reliability and fit and finish. Turns out that the TSX is rated just "OK" or a bit better.
