Arrow 1 question about Shifting a Manual Tansmission

Lets say your booting it in 2nd and the RPM's are up there...... then you decide you wanna take it easy, so you skip third and through it into 4th just to cruise.

Is this bad at all for the transmission, engine, etc?

Thanks for the info for such a noob question guys.

Skipping gears is fine, if not a little more wear on the synchros.

A friend of mine hardly ever uses 5th in his RSX, going from 4th to 6th all the time. As far as I know it is fine.

Honda/Acura has released a service bulletin telling dealers to advise customers to not skip gears when upshifting. It's tough on the synchronizers because they have to make larger changes in the speed of the mainshaft than if the gears are selected sequentially.

yes harder on the synchros, but they should be able to handle it if you do it once in awhile I would think. If you do it often maybe try double clutching (in between the 2 gears, pop the clutch in neutral and blip the trottle to rev match, then quickly clutch in and put it into 4th).

wow....i never thought 'skip shifting' would cause any damage to the syncros. I have been doing it since i learned how drive stick. I always thought it would be better as i was using the clutch less. Guess I'll have to start using all 6 gears

I do it on occasion while downshifting, from 6th to 4th say, but I wouldn't have guessed doing it with regularity would cause damage. Good info.

Wow..thanks for that tidbit. Hubby does it on a regular basis. It felt pretty good to tell him he was doing something wrong and actually have proof.

You can eliminate this problem by double-clutching, as was mentioned. When double clutching an upshift you do not blip the throttle obviously -- just clutch in, stick to neutral, clutch out, wait, clutch in, stick to new gear, clutch out.

Don't do this when there's an Acura tech in the car, apparently.

Huh, interesting. What about when downshifting. Lets say from 6th, to 4th (obviosly providing the RPM's are in check) but would this screw with the syncros?
