Mind seems to be slightly below 50% once fully warmed up.
Is it an illusion since the H mark isn't positioned at 12 o'clock?

That's weird that they would position it like that.
Past experience with other cars tells me it should be at 9 o'clock, not 8.

there really isnt a place its supposed to be. honda sets a point in which it is the proper operating temp. they dont put numbers on the gauge, because people always worry too much. look at it this way, if your gettin 34 miles a gallon, your car is operating at its correct temp. if it wasnt, it would still be in open loop, dumping a crap load of fuel all the time
if your really worried, take it to autozone or the dealer, ask them to hook up a scanner, and let them show you your engine coolant temp.
i also drive a grand cherokee, and the gauge is below the "center" so everything is fine

All other cars I've driven, the temp gauge is dead center.
If it was ever off center, it meant there was a cooling system (thermostat) problem.

just because the gauge on your other cars went off center, doesnt necessarilty mean a cooling problem. your car doesnt get to operating temp, and stick there. it varies, determined by alot of factors. but i understand what your saying. like the jlukja said, id be more worried if it was always on C or on H.

Every Honda and Acura I've owned, the temp gauge needle was always just below center once warmed up.
If it goes beyond center, you've got a coolant problem or worse.

Below center too
One thing to keep in mind is that factory temperature gauges are notoriously inaccurate. You can't judge whether an engine is running a little too cool or too hot by these things. Despite their analog sweep, they're engineered more from a binary on/off (i.e. hot/cold) perspective.
If you see the needle creeping well past midpoint toward the H in heavy traffic, you've got a problem and you'd better shut off the air conditioning compressor, crank up the heat and get off the road (or get moving) as soon as possible. Likewise, it never moves off C, you've either got a bad temperature sending unit, a defective gauge or a stuck thermostat. Or just a really really really really cold day,

Mine is exactly the same as yours. My Civic was in about the same relative position, and my Dodge truck is completely different.
It should be consistent from day to day, unless it's very hot or very cold out. It doesn't really concern me where on the gauge that consistency point is (within reason of course).

Part of it might be that with the way the honda gauges are, if the needle is at dead center, it covers up the little coolant icon, making it hard to find out what the hell the gauge is.
Most cars i've seen that have the needle at center have the icon below the needle so that it doesn't cover anything up.

I used to sell Honda's. The temperature should be somewhat below normal. For instance on a scale of 1-100; the temperature should be 40.
