Problems with my transmission PLZ HELP!

I have a 96' TL 2.5 with 165k mi..The 1st gear has been slipping pretty bad and then sometimes works okay. I had a friend tell me it's a sensor, and another tell me to just drop the pan and change the trans filter and put a couple quarts of new oil in..Has anyone had this problem? Or know how to fix it? PLZ help!

id do the drop the pan idea first, then clean all the connectors and solenoids while you're at it. But if it slips sometimes in first, your tranny may be on its way out already.

Check for trans codes by shorting the service check connector (blue 2 wire connector under the glove box) and read the flash codes; long flash=10, short pause, short flashes=1. so code 14 = F-p-ffff. Sometimes trans codes are stored even though CEL or D4 light are not flashing.

Agree w/ others about changing inlet screen. Careful w/ the 6mm bolts (about 10 as I remember), some are different lengths and have to go in correct depth holes. A manual is helpful. Use Honda ATF for sure.

good luck

Try replacing the screen and doing a drain and fill. Also replace the differential fluid. For the drain and fill use OEM Honda or Acura fluid. Then for the differential you can use 80W-90.
