Intermittent problem w/ my newly-acquired '96 TL 3.2: after turning TL off and removing keys, the red security LED on the stereo doesn't blink. No interior lights w door open, no power at all and TL won't restart. After varying amount of time, I hear clicks behind dashboard, interior lights light up and TL will start again. Have to enter stereo security code and lose all preset stations.

Other times, while driving, the ABS dash light comes on, causing the stereo to emit an audible "pop" and power off; ABS light quickly goes out, stereo "pops" again and powers back on. Recently, ABS light came on, radio didn't die, but TL still lost all power and wouldn't start.

Sometimes it works OK. Any ideas?

Sounds like a loose or corroded battery connection. Make sure battery terminals are tight and free of corrosion.

Intermittent keyswitch assembly is common failure on TL's and your symptoms are typical for this failure. Check battery first, but if all looks OK, the keyswitch is next.

Easy repair. Use search to find procedures and examples by others.

Turns out that the positive battery terminal was loose, mis-shapened and corroded. After cleaning, re-shaping and tightening, all of the wacky symptoms have disappeared. Thanks for your help and guidance!
